RU hosts four consecutive matches to kick off the year. After defeating UMBC 4-0 on Tuesday, Rutgers will take on Fordham Friday, followed by Stony Brook on Sunday and Towson on Sept. 4. The Scarlet Knights have not had four home games to start the season since 1999, when they played nine straight contests 'On the Banks.'
This will be the first meeting between Rutgers and Fordham. Against Atlantic 10 teams, Rutgers maintains a 33-16-7 record. The Scarlet Knights have outscored the conference 138-56.
The Scarlet Knights blanked the UMBC Retrievers, 4-0, Tuesday night at Yurcak Field in the season opener for both teams. Senior captain Caycie Gusman (Honolulu, Hawaii) scored back-to-back goals for RU in the first half, securing the win. Gusman moved up the all-time game winning goals list, as she is now tied for seventh place with seven.
Also in the 500th game of Rutgers women's soccer history, junior Kelsey Dumont (Wrightstown, Pa.) scored her first career goal. Senior captain Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) inched closer to Christa Aluotto (1989-92) for the second-highest shot total in Scarlet Knight history with 214.
Wednesday, Guthrie added another honor to her list as she has been selected as a candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. The senior captain is one of just 30 NCAA?women's soccer players to be named to the 2009 list. Along with midfielder Katie Miller of Marquette University, Guthrie is just one of two BIG EAST student-athletes named to the list.
