The Seawolves scored when Simpkinscame out of the net to stop the ball. Meghan Gilley stole the ball, beating the RU defender and scoring on an empty net.
At the start of the second half, Jonesbroke away from the pack, crossing from left to right and sending a rocket into the goal that the netminder just pushed left.
Karla Schacher (Tofield, Alberta) had an opportunity in the first overtime, with a hard shot that hit the post in the 92nd minute. The redshirt junior also just missed in the 116th minute as senior Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) led her to the goal, but she pushed it wide.
The Scarlet Knights controlled the ball for the majority of the first half, taking 11 shots, five of which were on goal. Gina Demaio fired a shot from 15 yards out with eight minutes left in the half, but Marisa Viola just got her hands on it and pushed the ball over the net.
The RU defense was dominant once again, as they did not allow Stony Brook to get a shot off until the 87th minute, when Gilley scored. Besides the tally, SBU did not get a shot on goal all night.
The Scarlet Knights return to action Friday, Sept. 4 for a doubleheader with men’s soccer. RU will face Towson at 5:30 p.m. The Rutgers men’s soccer team will take on Stanford directly following.
