PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Dec. 13, 2010) – The Rutgers women’s soccer team took time out of their schedules Friday night to attend a holiday party at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick. The party was thrown for families in the community who had lost a parent to cancer.
“This experience really brought us together,” said RU captain Tricia DiPaolo (Sparta, N.J.). “We had a great time with the kids. It humbled a lot of us and put things into perspective. The children and their families truly moved us.”
Over 30 families attended, along with over 100 Saint Peter’s employees, physicians and cancer survivors. During the party, children danced and sang Christmas carols, got a visit from Santa and were able to open presents.
The soccer team was invited by Rutgers University security guard Bruce Medley, who is in remission from State III cancer.
“A lot of us thought the injuries we experienced throughout our playing careers had been so traumatic, but after hearing Bruce talk about how he beat the odds, it really made us look at things in a different perspective,” commented DiPaolo. “Four years ago he was given two weeks to live and to hear his story – it was very emotional.”
