
Rutgers Women's Soccer Hosts Connecticut and Providence

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 29, 2010) -The Rutgers women's soccer team renews two BIG EAST American Division rivalries this weekend with Connecticut and Providence this Friday and Sunday at Yurcak Field. Both games will be televised through Verizon FiOS1 and can be seen live through Knightvision Broadband on www.scarletknights.com.
RU (6-5, 1-2) split last weekend, defeating No. 19 Georgetown, 1-0, at home on Friday before falling at Villanova on Sunday. Senior Ashley Medcalf (Waipahu, Hawaii) scored the lone goal for the Scarlet Knights, off a set piece from a Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) corner. RU outshot VU 9-3 in the second half, but could not find the back of the net for the equalizer.
Goalkeeper Sam Perretty (Parkland, Fla.) was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after earning her first two career starts over the weekend and notching a shutout win over No. 19 Georgetown on Friday. Perretty totaled seven saves and played 180 minutes in a 1-1 weekend for the Scarlet Knights.
Redshirt freshman Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Canada) leads the Scarlet Knights with eight points on three goals and two assists. Redshirt sophomore April Price (Mechanicsville, Va.) ranks second on the team with two goals and two assists for six points.
The Friday night showdown between RU and UConn (5-4-2, 1-1-1) kicks off at 7 p.m. This will be the 19th matchup between the Scarlet Knights and Huskies, but first since Oct. 5, 2007. RU has not defeated UConn since Oct. 17, 1987 in the first contest between the two squads. After that meeting, Connecticut rattled off 14-straight wins. Over the last three match-ups - including two in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals - the two teams have played to a draw, each advancing once.
Leading the Huskies is junior Jessica Shufelt with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Between the pipes is classmate Jessica Dulski with a 1.04 GAA and 44 saves on the year.Head coach of the Huskies is Len Tsantiris in his 30th season. He led UConn to 26 consecutive NCAA National Tournaments from 1982-2007. Tsantiris is the second women's soccer coach to record over 450 wins (479).
Providence (7-2-1, 1-1-1) visits Yurcak at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Scarlet Knights own a 13-1 record all-time against the Friars. RU had won 13-straight until falling, 1-0, at PC in 2007.
Redshirt senior Jill Camburn leads PC with 13 points on four goals and five assists. Time in net has been split between senior Jill Schott and junior Caitlin Walker. Each has five starts on the year. Schott holds the advantage in GAA (0.44) and save percentage (.882) while Walker owns five wins on the season. Head coach of the Friars is Jim McGirr in his sixth season. GAME NOTES
