Oct 14 | Women's Soccer
Louisville, Ky. (Oct. 14, 2011) – Despite a late surge, Rutgers women's soccer (7-7-2, 2-5-2) could not overcome two early goals by Louisville (8-5-3, 6-1-2), falling to UofL by a score of 2-1 Friday night at Cardinal Park. Freshman Stefanie Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) scored her second goal in three games – and third of the season – in the effort.
Louisville struck early, scoring on a breakaway in the fourth minute. Jordan Pawlik moved the ball forward to Christine Exeter, who blasted a shot into the lower right of the net from 16 yards out. It was the first career goal allowed for junior goalkeeper Jessica Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.).
Exeter added to the score in the 28th minute, collecting a loose ball in the midfield and charging towards the net. The sophomore forward notched her 11th goal of the season into the bottom left of the net to push the Cardinals ahead, 2-0.
Junior forward Stefanee Pace (Kearny, N.J.) played the ball from the midfield to a sprinting Scholz up the center of the field. The freshman corralled the pass and floated a shot over the UofL netminder to pull the Scarlet Knights within one score.
It was just the third time this season Rutgers had allowed two or more scores.
Pace looked to put pressure on the Cardinals early, tallying a shot on frame just three minutes into the match, but UofL keeper Chloe Kiefer made the grab. Eight minutes before the half, freshman Cassie Inacio (Manalapan, N.J.) nearly got RU on the board, but Kiefer made another athletic save.
Scholz nearly tied the game with three seconds remaining, blasting a shot on frame, but Kiefer was able to make the save and preserve the win.
On the night, the Scarlet Knights were outshot by the Cardinals by a 20-4 margin. Janosz made six saves in the first loss of her career. UofL earned six corners, while RU could not muster an opportunity.
Rutgers finishes its two-game road swing at Cincinnati Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
