RUTGERS VS. JAMES MADISON

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Only one game is on the schedule for Rutgers Field Hockey this weekend, as they will begin a three-game homestand to close the regular season. On Sunday the Scarlet Knights will host the Dukes of James Madison, hosting the contest at 2 p.m.
James Madison Notes
- With a game Friday against Drexel, James Madison enters the weekend at 9-5 overall.
- Rutgers and JMU share a mutual opponent in Northwestern, who beat both teams in overtime.
- Loes Stijntes leads the team with 13 goals, while Taylor West is second with 10 tallies.
- Christy Morgan was rehired as the Dukes' head coach in 2014 after previously leading them for nine seasons from 1991 to 2000, including leading them to their first-ever national championship in 1994.
Series History
The two teams have met four times, with the most recent being a 5-1 win for Rutgers in 2011. The Dukes lone victory in the series came in 2010, which was preceded by a 2-1 Rutgers win in 1983 and a 1-1 tie in the first ever meeting between the squads in 1981.

Rutgers defensive core, led by its starting backfield of Sofia Walia, Devon Freshnock, and Elyse Broderick, has had a very strong season holding down opponents. The team has combined for nine defensive saves through 15 games, which is second in the Big Ten and eighth nationally.
One-Goal Games
One defining feature of Rutgers' season has been the closeness of many games. RU has played 15 games, and 10 of them have been determined by one-goal, including the last six games. This is the third straight year that Rutgers has played at least 10 games determined by just one goal, with the school record being 15 such games in 1982.
Heart of a Champion
Katie Champion currently paces the Scarlet Knights, with a team-high eight goals and 21 points. She is also second on the squad with five assists. The junior has shown a knack for scoring in bunches, with three multi-goal games this year.
Walli, Walli, Walia
Sophomore defender Sofia Walia is a vital player for the Scarlet Knights on both ends of the field. In addition to her role in the backfield, she has shown a scoring touch. In 12games this year she has six goals and 18 points, both second on the team, with a team-best six assists.
Between the Pipes
Shevaun Hayes has started all 15 RU games in goal, playing over 1081minutes in the cage and posting a 6-9 record, with a 2.59 goals against average and .685 save percentage. The six wins on the year represent a new career high. She averages 5.80 saves per game with 87 on the year, the third best mark in the Big Ten, and is now over 125 saves for her career.
What to Watch for
- Sophie Wright (18 career goals) needs two goals to break into the top-10 all time at Rutgers.
- Jenn Staab's next point will tie her career-high.
- Ali Stever's next assist will set a new career-high.

Of the nine field hockey schools in the Big Ten, six of them are ranked in the NFHCA Top 20, including three in the top 10: Maryland (2), Penn State (4), Northwestern (9), Michigan (12), Iowa (15), and Indiana (19).
