PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) released the final postseason ranking of the 2014 season Tuesday, tabbing the Rutgers women's soccer team No. 25 in the nation.
Final NSCAA Rankings
Season Review It is the program's first postseason top-25 ranking by the NSCAA since earning the No. 16 spot to close the 2009 campaign.
"There have been many individual honors this year and the players have a lot to be proud of," said head coach Mike O'Neill. "To finish the season ranked in the top 25 speaks volumes to how hard the players and coaching staff worked from day one. The coaching staff is very proud of the players' hard work, quality and consistency in their performance. We are 30 strong."
This season, Rutgers climbed as high as No. 14 in the NSCAA rankings, earning the highest overall tab in program history by Soccer America at No. 7 following a 1-0 upset at then-No. 6/7 Penn State.
The Scarlet Knights (13-6-1, 8-4-1 Big Ten) wrapped up their first season in the Big Ten Conference in fourth place, become one of just three league teams to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
Junior back Brianne Reed (Tinton Falls, N.J.), a First Team All-Big Ten selection, was named to the 2014 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/ Continental Tire All-America Third Team earlier this week, becoming the first RU All-American in two years.
Also maintaining the program's standard of excellence were juniors Erica Skroski (Galloway, N.J.) and Hayley Katkowski (Westford, Mass.), who earned spots on the All-Big Ten Second Team. Standout freshman goalkeeper Casey Murphy picked up All-Freshman honors in her first season in net.
Off the field, the league honored redshirt junior Amanda DeVolk (Frisco, Texas) as the team's Sportsmanship Award winner.
Rutgers achieved its third consecutive 13-win season, defeating La Salle, 2-0, at Yurcak Field in the first round of NCAAs (Nov. 14) to advance to the second round for the second time in three seasons.
RU was edged, 3-0, in the second round at No. 2 and national runner-up Virginia on Nov. 21.
