OXFORD, Ohio -- Finishing a two-game road trip through Ohio, Rutgers field hockey fell at Miami 7-1 on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops Rutgers to 6-7 overall, while Miami improves to 9-6 on the year.

Devon Freshnock scored the lone goal for the Scarlet Knights. Miami held a 19-12 advantage in shots and slim 9-8 edge in corners. Shevaun Hayes made eight saves for Rutgers.

"We refocused at halftime and came out and battled back in the second half," head coach Meredith Civico said. "It didn't go the way we wanted, but we will take some things from it and come back refocused going into next weekend."

The RedHawks scored five goals in a span of 15 minutes in the middle of the first half. Emily George and Geagy Pritchard each had two scores in that span as Miami took a 5-0 lead at halftime.

Freshnock scored for RU early in the second half. Katie Champion inserted a penalty corner, and Elyse Broderick sent the ball to Freshnock, who scored her fourth goal of the season. The junior back entered the year with one goal through 37 career games.

Miami's Bea Dechant added two goals late in the game, finishing the 7-1 final score.

Rutgers is back in Piscataway next weekend for the final two home contests of the year. Friday the Scarlet Knights will host Penn State at 3 p.m. The crucial Big Ten Conference matchup will be the team's Blackout Game. Sunday is Senior Day, where RU will honor its four seniors prior to a noon contest against Maryland.
