Box Score

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - While the Rutgers men's soccer team pressured the Wisconsin net all evening long, the Badgers' last second shot hit the crossbar and bounced into net as the Scarlet Knights fell, 1-0, in double overtime.

The Scarlet Knights, who were playing in the their Big Ten opener, fell to 2-2 on the season, while the Badgers earned their first win of the year and improved to 1-4 overall.

"It's a heartbreaker. At the end of the day, this happens sometimes, not very often. We played incredibly well the entire game," said head coach Dan Donigan. "There were portions of the game we had them on their backs and I thought it was just going to be a matter of time. Unfortunately, give Wisconsin credit, they battled and defended well to the very last second."

The Wisconsin defense and net endured a barrage of Rutgers shots throughout the night led by senior Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.), who saw five of his game-high eight shots on goal. At the end of the night, RU outshot the Badgers, 27-12.

While Rutgers held a slight edge, 6-5, in shots at the half, the Scarlet Knight defense kept Wisconsin in check denying any chances on goal. The Badgers' best ventures came as goalkeeper David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.) was fouled after trying to contain a loose ball in the box and minutes later redshirt senior Mitch Lurie (Atlanta, Ga.) blocked a blast by Mark Segbers.

Meanwhile, the Scarlet Knights held possession for much of the half with four different players with chances to light up the scoreboard.

The Scarlet Knights continued to dominate possession time in the second half, but between netminder Adrian Remeniuk coming up with the critical saves and the Badger defense blocking shots, the game was forced into overtime. In the second half alone, RU outshot Wisconsin 17-4, but was unable to find the back of the net resulting in its second overtime contest in the three all-time meetings with the Badgers.

Some of Rutgers' best chances came in the early moments of the second half.

Moments after the opening whistle to the second stanza, junior Erik Sa (Watchung, N.J.) found open space from the top left of the 18 off a free kick that Remeniuk managed to scoop up.

RU also had several looks in the 55th minute after a set piece from Lurie saw freshman Brian Hawkins (Chesterfield, N.J.), sophomore Jason Wright (Kingston, Jamaica) and Taintor all with shots from the box denied by the Badgers defense.

Moments later, Taintor dribbled past three Wisconsin defenders only to find Remeniuk in the way of finding the back of the net.

In what looked like would be a stalemate, in the final seconds of the second overtime, the Badgers controlled a clear at the midfield with a combo play from Tom Barlow to Christopher Mueller. Mueller's shot hit the cross bar, then the left post before bouncing into the back of the net for the golden goal.

"I told our guys that's what the game can be, it can stick a dagger in you and the margin of error is that small. If you don't finish it off until the very last whistle, you are going to get hurt,' added Donigan. "Unfortunately our kids learned a tough lesson tonight, but at the same time it'll be a good lesson for our guys moving forward. They can learn how to respond from this . I'm proud of the way they played."

In goal, Remeniuk totaled 10 saves. Greczek, meanwhile, logged his lone save of the night in the 65th minute saving a Barlow header.

The Rutgers men's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Monmouth. The game will be streamed on ESPN3.
