PISCATAWAY, N.J. - It was a senior-led effort for Rutgers field hockey Sunday afternoon, as the team grabbed a crucial 3-1 win at Ohio State. Rutgers (8-6, 2-4 Big Ten) seniors Devon Freshnock, Kimberly Jevic and Sarah Regn scored on the afternoon, while seniors Rachel Yaney and Sofia Walia added assists to defeat the Buckeyes (5-10, 0-6).
Rutgers outshot Ohio State 16-6 on the day, and had a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners. Freshman Amanda Lamb made two saves to earn the victory.
"I'm really happy for the team, coming back after a tough loss on Friday and beating Ohio State.," head coach Meredith Civico said. "It was a very good game. The team executed the game plan well. We managed the game really well and showed a lot of maturity and composure. I'm really pleased and proud of the team. This was a really big win for us."
OSU got on the board first, just three minutes into the game. Maddy Humphrey tipped a shot in from in front of the net to give the home squad an early advantage.
Rutgers answered back fairly quickly. RU earned a penalty stroke 15 minutes later, and it was Devon Freshnock taking it and scoring to level the score at 1-1.
Rutgers went in front on a goal ten minutes later. Rachel Yaney carried the ball on the right side, sending a pass in front. Kimberly Jevic received the ball in front of the goalkeeper, and finished off the pass for a 2-1 lead with 7:34 left in the first half.
The Scarlet Knights added an insurance tally in the second half. Walia sent a long ball into the circle, and Regn redirected it expertly past the goalkeeper. The tally gave RU a 3-1 lead, which they would hold onto for the victory.
Next up for Rutgers is the final two home games of the season. Friday versus Penn State is at 3 p.m., followed by Senior Day Sunday at 1 p.m. against Richmond.
Postgame Notes
With the win, Rutgers clinches a berth in the Big Ten Conference Tournament for the second time.
Freshnock, a senior who entered the year with five career goals, now has six goals this season.
Jevic, a senior who had zero career goals entering the year, now has four this season.
Regn, a senior who had three career goals entering the year, now has five on the season.
Yaney, a senior who had three career assists entering the year, now has four on the season.
The Scarlet Knights now lead the all-time series against OSU 4-2.
