Game Notes Release: Bieda Named Tewaaraton Semifinalist
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - No. 16 Rutgers men's lacrosse (10-3, 3-1 Big Ten) will play its regular season finale at 7 p.m. on Saturday night at Ohio Stadium against Ohio State (6-8, 1-3 Big Ten). The game will be televised nationally on the Big Ten Network.
Rutgers will be looking for its 11th win of the season, which would tie the program record for victories (set in 1986). The Scarlet Knights can also earn a share of the Big Ten regular season title with a win and a victory by Johns Hopkins against Maryland.
"Our team has gotten better each week," head coach Brian Brecht said. "I appreciate and admire how hard this team has worked and developed. After the Penn State win, we turned the focus back to ourselves and kept the emphasis on having strong practices leading up to the Ohio State game."
Rutgers enters the game having won five of its last six games, including two ranked victories in that span (No. 9 Johns Hopkins, No. 17 Penn State). Last Friday, RU overcame deficits of 6-1 and 13-9 to rally for a 15-14 victory over Penn State to reclaim possession of the Friendship Cup Trophy. Jules Heningburg led the offensive with a career-high six goals and eight points, and Chris Groel had a game-high six ground balls. Both earned Big Ten weekly awards for their efforts.
On the season, the Scarlet Knights have been buoyed by a three-headed monster at the attack line. The trio of Scott Bieda (25 goals, 32 assists, 57 points), Jules Heningburg (37 goals, 17 assists, 54 points) and Adam Charalambides (33 goals, 14 assists, 47 points) has combined for 95 goals, 63 assists and 158 points. That represents 56.8 percent of the team's goal-scoring and 59.3 percent of the team's point-scoring. Bieda leads the conference in points and assists, Heningburg leads the conference in goals and is second in points, and Charalambides ranks second in goals and fourth in points. That combined total is second in the NCAA for any starting attack unit.
Rutgers has also gotten exceptional production from underclassmen. Six of their top eight scorers are underclassmen: Jules Heningburg, Adam Charalambides, Josh Jordan, Christian Mazzone, Christian Scarpello and Chad Toliver. That group has combined for 98 goals, 40 assists, and 138 points. RU also starts a sophomore defenseman in Michael Rexrode, who has a team-high 15 caused turnovers.
Ohio State has skidded to 6-8 overall after starting the season 5-1 and having been ranked as high as No. 11 in the nation. The Buckeyes have lost seven of their last eight games, but all seven games have been against ranked opponents. Offensively, OSU is led by Austin Shanks (14 goals, 16 assists), Carter Brown (20 goals, nine assists) and Eric Fannell (15 goals, nine assists). Between the pipes Tom Carey boasts an 8.97 goals-against-average and .514 save percentage.
Rutgers leads the all-time series 7-1. Last season, Rutgers toppled No. 10 Ohio State in a convincing 17-10 victory on Senior Day. RU took control with a 7-0 scoring run in the second quarter and never looked back. Among returners, Heningburg had three goals and Scott Bieda had six points (two goals, four assists).
