Goodale returns to alma mater for non-conference dual
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – After a week off from competition, No. 11 Rutgers wrestling returns to the mat for a road dual against Lock Haven on Friday night in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start inside Thomas Field House. A livestream of the non-conference dual will be available via HavenC@st, while WQBR 99.9 FM will have the radio call.
This will be the first dual match for the Bald Eagles in 2017-18, who are receiving votes in the latest USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll.
Redshirt senior Richie Lewis enters that match after he claimed a gold medal in the 70 kg freestyle at the U23 World Championships over the weekend in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Lewis defeated Kumar Vinod (India) by decision, 3-1, in the title bout to secure his first international championship.
The 70kg gold medal capped an impressive championships run for Lewis, who was competing in his first international tournament of his career and finished U23's a perfect 5-0. In his five matches, Lewis outscored his opponents, 45-11, with three decisions and two tech falls.
In their last time out on the collegiate scene, 125-pounder Nick Suriano and 174-pounder Joseph Grello claimed individual titles at the Black Knight Invitational on Nov. 19 in West Point, N.Y. In total, 12 of 14 competitors for the Scarlet Knights placed at the invite. RU also finished the invite with two runner-ups – 174-pounder Jordan Pagano and heavyweight Razohnn Gross – and two third-place finishers in 141-pounder Michael Van Brill and 197-pounder Kevin Mulligan.

Scouting Lock Haven
Lock Haven, who has yet to compete in a dual this season, enters Friday's match after it hosted the 12th annual Mat-Town Open on Sunday. 125-pounder Josiah Kline claimed an individual title, while Johnathan Ross (157) and Jared Siegrist (174) both finished as runner ups at the tournament.
The Bald Eagles feature four 2017 NCAA qualifiers - DJ Fehlman (133), Kyle Shoop (141), Ronnie Perry (149) and Thomas Haines (HWT). Perry is a two-time national qualifier.
Three Lock Haven wrestlers are recognized in the latest Intermat rankings - Perry (No. 15, 149), Haines (No. 15, HWT) and Chance Marsteller (No. 10, 165).
Series vs. Lock Haven
Lock Haven leads the all-time series, 4-2, though Rutgers has captured wins in the last two matchups. The last time the two programs met was on Feb. 15, 2014, as RU defeated the Bald Eagles, 18-16, at the College Ave. Gym.
Rutgers also defeated Lock Haven on Dec. 14, 2008 on the road.
The programs met for the first time on Nov. 22, 1992.
Ranked Matchups
According to Intermat, Friday night features a ranked vs. ranked matchup at 149 pounds, as No. 13 DeLuca will go against No. 15 Perry. DeLuca is 1-0 versus ranked foes this season, after he defeated then-No. 14 Davion Jefferies (Oklahoma) on Nov. 11 at the Journeymen Northeast Duals.
Gross will get another chance at No. 15 Haines, after Lock Haven's heavyweight pinned Gross in the championship bout at the Black Knight Invitational on Nov. 19.

- Gross' only two losses this season have come against nationally-ranked opponents. Gross dropped a 7-1 decision to No. 13 Yousiff Hemida (Maryland) in his first bout of the year, and lost to No. 14 Thomas Haines (Lock Haven) in the championship match at the Black Knight Invitational.
- Head coach Scott Goodale will make a return to his alma mater on Friday at Lock Haven, where he was a three-time NCAA qualifier for the Bald Eagles. During his time at Lock Haven, Goodale produced 99 career victories and finished second at the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Tournament twice.
- Goodale is 2-1 all-time coaching against Lock Haven, which includes wins in 2014 and 2008.
- In Rutgers first three duals of the season, RU's first four weights (Suriano-125, DelVecchio-133, Michael Van Brill-141, DeLuca-149) have combined for a 11-1 record and 3-1 mark against ranked foes. The quartet has outscored its opponents, 117-46, against Maryland, No. 19 Oklahoma and Virginia.
