Scarlet Knights qualify for sixth consecutive year
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The No. 23 Rutgers women's soccer team qualified for its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament, as announced on Monday's NCAA Division I Selection Show. Rutgers will host La Salle on Saturday, Nov. 11 for a 5 p.m. ET match at Yurcak Field.
"The standard here is that we compete for championships every year," said head coach Mike O'Neill. "To be a top program you have to have consistency in all that you do. It speaks volumes to the players that have been here in the past and the current players. We talk about the culture to compete for championships and again we have that opportunity."
The Scarlet Knights (12-2-5) will appear in their eighth NCAA Tournament in the last 10 years and 12th time overall. All-time, RU is 11-9-5 in NCAA Tourney action and 7-0-2 when hosting at Yurcak Field. In 2015, RU reached the College Cup for the first time in program history.
RU is one of five Big Ten teams to qualify for NCAAs. Despite Rutgers playing No. 11 Penn State to a 0-0 double-overtime draw in the 2017 Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal, the Nittany Lions escaped in extra rounds of penalty kicks, 4-3, to advance.
Rutgers enters the NCAA Tournament with a nation-best 0.247 GAA, while also ranked second in team shutout percentage (0.798) with 15 clean sheets in 19 contests.
"We just have to get better every day. The only thing we have to worry about is La Salle since that is the next game," said O'Neill. "We have to continue to improve because La Salle is a very good team, very well coached team. We expect it to be another good game."
La Salle captured the Atlantic 10 Championship, defeating VCU 1-0 in double overtime to earn the league's automatic bid.
Rutgers and La Salle have met nine times in program history with the Scarlet Knights holding an 8-0-1 lead in the all-time series. The teams most recently matched up in the First Round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament, where Rutgers earned a 2-0 win at home.
