PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Longtime Rutgers men's lacrosse head coach Tom Hayes will be inducted into the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) Hall of Fame this Friday. The ceremony will take place on Friday, December 8, 2017 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. Tickets can be purchased here.
"This class, like those before, include leaders of the game from past to present. The International Lacrosse Federation's U-19 champions cup is named after Tom Hayes," head coach J.B. Clarke, president of the IMLCA. "Each coach in this class has made significant contributions to the game and I'm excited to witness their enshrinement."
Hayes coached the Scarlet Knights from 1975-2000 after five years as the head coach at Drexel. The winningest coach in program history, compiling a 194-156 record, Hayes led the team to 21 winning seasons and to final top-20 rankings for 24-straight years. Scarlet Knight firsts which occurred under Hayes include the first team to win 11 games in a season (1986), the first victory in an NCAA tournament game (1986) and the longest winning streak of nine (1982).
During the Hayes era, 55 All-Americans were selected from Rutgers, as well as 30 North-South All-Star game participants. He led the Scarlet Knights to five NCAA Tournament apperances. Hayes was previously inducted this year into the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame. A two-time "USILA Man of The Year," Hayes was previously inducted into the Sewanhaka High School, U.S. Lacrosse, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Long Island Lacrosse Halls of Fame. As a player, Hayes was a two-time USILA All-American in 1961 and 1962 as a midfielder for Penn State.
