Men's Soccer Travels To No. 5 Maryland

Scarlet Knights & Terps Kickoff at 8 p.m. on BTN

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men's soccer team is back out on the road on Tuesday night for a matchup with No. 5 Maryland at Ludwig Field. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. in front of the BTN cameras with Dan Kelly and Chris Doran on the call.

B1G PLAY CONTINUES
The Scarlet Knights opened the 2017 campaign with four-consecutive road matches and returned home to host No. 13 Michigan State on Friday night at Yurcak Field. The Spartans not only served as both RU's home and Big Ten opener.

Despite stopping the Spartans' season-opening shutout streak, RU fell 2-1 to its third nationally-ranked opponent of the young season.

After playing to a 0-0 stalemate at the half, Michigan State took a 2-0 lead 10 minutes into the second half. The Scarlet Knights were relentless in trying to tie the game, ending the evening outshooting the Spartans, 19-6.

Senior Ryan Peterson made it a one-goal game with a penalty kick in the 82nd minute ending MSU's streak of 441 scoreless minutes. Michigan State had opened up the year with four-straight clean sheets for the first time since 1968.

Rutgers keeper Rafael Pereira, coming off a shutout at UMKC in the previous game, registered three saves.

On Tuesday against the Terps, the Scarlet Knights will be facing its second-straight nationally-ranked Big Ten squad and its fourth top 15 team thru the season's first six games.

ABOUT MARYLAND
The three-time defending Big Ten champions, Maryland meets Rutgers with a 4-0-1 overall record and tied No. 4 Indiana, 0-0, in their Big Ten opener on Friday night in College Park.

Although the next set of polls will be unveiled on Tuesday, the Terps were ranked at No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 2 both in the TopDrawer Soccer and College Soccer News Polls last week.

Tuesday's marks the final game of a  five-game homestand at Ludwig Field, which in addition to Friday's night's draw with No. 4 Indiana included a 3-2 overtime win over No. 15 UCLA.

Maryland is led by junior forward Gordon Wild, with two of his three goals on the season coming from penalty kicks. Wild was the 2016 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, ranking in the top three nationally in both goals and points. He is also among the student-athletes on the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch list.

Wild is followed by senior midfielder Jake Rozhansky (2G, 2A), Freshman forward Eric Matzelevich (2G) and junior forward/midfielder Eryk Williamson (1G, 2A) on the stat sheet.

In goal, redshirt sophomore Dayne St. Claire is posting a .750 save percentage and .778 goals against average, totaling 14 stops thus far.

Maryland was picked atop the 2017 Big Ten Preseason Coaches Poll.

LAST TIME VS. MARYLAND
The Rutgers men's soccer team pushed No. 4 Maryland to double overtime on September 3, 2016 at Yurcak Field with the Terps netting the golden goal with six minutes remaining in the game for the 2-1 victory.

After Maryland went ahead 1-0 early in the game off a penalty kick by Gordon Wild, the Scarlet Knights' Dante Perez blasted in the equalizer in the 27th minute.

The Terps' Jake Rozhansky, however, captured the golden goal in the 104th minute taking a rebound right in front of the goal line off a saved shot from Sebastian Elney.

Rutgers made its comeback from down 1-0 as Ryan Peterson took a corner kick for Rutgers that was batted out by the Terp defense. However, Perez swooped in at the top of the 18 to take the clear and find the back of the Maryland net for RU's first goal of the year.

The game remained knotted at 1-1 after regulation after the Rutgers defense stopped six attempts on net in the second half. In addition to senior goalkeeper David Greczek making four of his eight stops in the second frame, former Scarlet Knights Ross Tetro and Tyler Morris also came away with stops at the goal line to keep the contest tied midway through the second half.

With the clock ticking down in regulation, Tim McQuaid played a throw-in to Rayon Gibbs along the left side. Gibbs sent the ball into Jason Wright at the penalty mark, but a foul was called negating the potential Scarlet Knight game-winner and the upset.

In the second overtime, former Scarlet Knight David Greczek made a point blank save on a shot by Sebastian Elney, but Terp teammate Rozhansky collected the rebound and put the ball high into the net to prevent the Scarlet Knight upset.

TO  BE THE BEST, PLAY THE BEST
As the Scarlet Knights play their sixth game of the season, RU will be facing its fourth nationally-ranked opponent of the year.

RU faced two of the country's best during opening weekend with 2016 national runner-up and No. 2 Wake Forest and 2016 national semifinalist and No. 4 North Carolina.

RU will also face No. 4 Indiana on the road on Sept. 22.
