Scarlet Knights To Open Big Ten Tournament Play as No. 7 Seed at Wisconsin Next Sunday
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Rutgers men's soccer team dropped its regular season finale, 2-0, at Penn State on Sunday and will be the seventh seed at the 2018 Big Ten Tournament beginning next weekend.
Despite the Scarlet Knights outshooting the Nittany Lions, 10-9, on the afternoon, Penn State (6-8-2, 3-3-2 Big Ten) was able to capture the game-winner early in the game and put away an insurance tally midway through the second half.
Callum Prichatt put Penn State onto the scoreboard in the 16th minute of play, scoring from outside the right of the box and finding the left corner of the RU net.
The Nittany Lions added in an insurance goal in the 64th minute. While at the top of the 18, Penn State's Ethan Beckford passed a few steps ahead to Austin Maloney. While the Scarlet Knight defense closed in, Maloney used a one-touch back to Beckford who found the clearing into the center of net.
Leading scorer Jordan Hall had four of Rutgers' (4-12-1, 2-6-0 Big Ten) chances. Back-to-back shots midway through the first half were scooped up by PSU keeper Josh Levine. The Manchester, England native also had a chance to put RU on the scoreboard with 14 minutes to go as he was a recipient of a pass from Thomas DiVizio at the top of the box, split three Nittany Lion defenders, but saw his attempt go wide left of the post from eight yards out.
A Hall restart also nearly got the Scarlet Knights onto the scoreboard in the 71st minute. Penn State tried to clear out his free kick from the top left corner of the box on a header, but sophomore Vincent Borden intercepted the clear, but has had his strike blocked from eight yards out.
Penn State's Levine made three stops in the game, while Rutgers' Rafael Pereira registered two saves.
"We didn't have a good night," said head coach Dan Donigan. "We were unable to string passes together and needed better help from our midfield and up top in coming out of the backfield. Now for us, it's refocusing and getting ourselves ready and as healthy as possible to go into next weekend's quarterfinal at Wisconsin."
The seventh seeded Scarlet Knights will travel to the tournament's number two seed, Wisconsin, for a Big Ten quarterfinal matchup on Sunday, Nov. 4.
