PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 15 Rutgers field hockey dominated a former BIG EAST rival on Sunday afternoon, defeating Georgetown (9-4, 2-2) by a 7-0 final score. The Scarlet Knights led 25-6 in shots and 11-3 in corners in improving to 9-4 overall. RU had five different goal scorers, led by two apiece from
Daphne Groothuis and
Linde van Schaik.
Tayla Parkes,
Nikki Profita and
Austyn Cuneo also scored for the home team.
Gianna Glatz (one save) and
Amanda Lamb (three saves) split the game in net for the team's sixth shutout of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Rutgers got on the board first on a goal from freshman
Tayla Parkes. She took a feed from
Kerrie Burns and chipped it over the goalkeeper. Five minutes later,
Daphne Groothuis converted a penalty stroke and the Scarlet Knights took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the second stanza, Rutgers added five more goals to their ledger.
Linde van Schaik had the first, inserting a corner, getting it back and finishing.
Nikki Profita then added a goal, deflecting in a shot from Groothuis. Two minutes later it was Groothuis added one of her own, her second of the day.
Van Schaik added her second goal of the day, putting in a rebound. Then
Austyn Cuneo tallied a late goal to make the final margin 7-0.
QUOTABLE
"This was a good win. To get seven goals from so many different goal scorers was excellent. The performance by both
Gianna Glatz and
Amanda Lamb in goal to secure the shutout was great. We had a lot of players contributing today and developing that depth has been key."
"We did really well today. Offensively we put a lot of pressure on the opponent. Defensively, we were really tight in the back. This was a good win for us."
