Scarlet Knights travel to No. 8 Duke for a First Round match on Friday, Nov. 9
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The No. 25 Rutgers women's soccer team has qualified for its seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament, as announced on Monday's NCAA Division I Selection Show. Rutgers will travel to No. 4 seed Duke on Friday, Nov. 9 for a 7 p.m. ET match.
"I'm happy for the team, the seniors and the program for the opportunity to play in the NCAAs," said head coach Mike O'Neill. "For it to be the seventh year in a row, it speaks volumes to the consistency of the Rutgers women's soccer program. We are excited for the challenge and we look forward to getting out on the field tomorrow."
The Scarlet Knights (11-3-5) will appear in their ninth NCAA Tournament in the last 11 years and 13th time overall. All-time, RU is 12-9-6 in NCAA Tourney action. In 2015, RU reached the College Cup for the first time in program history.
RU is one of six Big Ten teams to qualify for NCAAs. RU finished as the runner-ups for the conference regular season title, as the second-place result marks the highest for the program since joining the league in 2014.
Additionally, the Scarlet Knights earned a spot in its fifth straight Big Ten Tournament this year, claiming its highest seed to date at No. 2. The Scarlet Knights were edged by the eventual 2018 Big Ten Tournament Champions, Minnesota, by a late goal in a quarterfinal match at home.
Anchored by seven All-Big Ten selections, five of which were on the defensive end, Rutgers enters the NCAA Tournament with a goals-against average (0.624) that ranks 27th in the nation.
The Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Meagan McClelland, ranks 27th in the NCAA with a 0.624 GAA, while First Team All-Big Ten selection, Amirah Ali, ranks 22nd with five game-winning goals.
No. 8 Duke finished the regular season with an overall record of 14-3-2, including a second-place finish in the ACC with an 8-1-1 conference mark. The Blue Devils fell in a 1-0 decision to then-No. 9 Florida State in the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals.
It will mark the fifth meeting between the programs. The squads last met in the First Round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, when Rutgers earned a 2-0 victory over Duke at a neutral site.
