PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Brackets and seeding were unveiled for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, held March 15-17 in Cleveland. Six Scarlet Knights will compete in the three-day tournament held at Quicken Loans Arena.
Nick Suriano received the No. 4 seed at 125 pounds and will face unseeded J.R. Wert (Rider) in the opening round. Suriano went a perfect 21-0 this season with wins over five ranked Intermat foes and delivered the first individual Midlands title in program history back in December.
Richie Lewis is the No. 6 seed at 165 pounds and will wrestle Quentin Perez (Campbell) to open the championships. Lewis (18-4) earned a third-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, highlighted by a last-second victory over then-No. 2 Alex Marinelli of Iowa in the consolation semifinals.
An at-large selection for NCAA's, Nicholas Gravina secured the No. 14 seed at 184 pounds and gets Christian LaFagola (Brown). Ranked No. 9 in the latest coaches panel poll and No. 13 by Intermat, Gravina (17-5) produced a 6-1 mark in Big Ten dual action in 2017-18 with victories over two top-10 opponents in No. 7 Taylor Venz (Nebraska) and No. 9 Ricky Robertson (Wisconsin).
John Van Brill collected the No. 15 seed at 157 pounds and will face Alex Klucker (Lock Haven). Van Brill (20-11) placed eighth at the Big Ten Championships last weekend and finished the regular season with back-to-back victories over ranked foes in No. 14 Andrew Crone (Wisconsin) and No. 13 Michael D'Angelo (Princeton).
Scott DelVecchio (133) and Eleazar DeLuca (149) are unseeded for nationals. DelVecchio will face No. 14 Korbin Myers (Edinboro) in the first round, while DeLuca gets a rematch from Big Ten's with Steven Bleise (Minnesota) to start the championships. DelVecchio wrestled to a sixth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships last weekend, while DeLuca placed eighth at the conference event.
This will be the third career appearances at nationals for DelVecchio and Gravina, while Lewis, Suriano and Van Brill will all make their second career trips to NCAA's. This marks the first career national tournament for DeLuca.
The NCAA Championships will run from March 15-17 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, with the first session scheduled to begin at noon on March 15. The full championships schedule is available here.
