FAIRFAX, Calif. – Harriet Allsebrook set a program-record with a nine-under par 207 (67-70-70) to win the Juli Inkster Invitational at Meadow Club, while helping Rutgers to a first place finish at the 12-team event with a team-record 868 (284-295-289) total. The Scarlet Knights entered the tournament No. 83 in the Golfstat collegiate ratings and bested No. 26 Pepperdine, No. 32 San Jose State and No. 47 California, among others, to capture their first tournament title since the Hartford Hawks Invitational in April of 2010.
"This is a great team win for us," said Rutgers head coach
Kari Williams. "Harriet led the way and our entire lineup came through with the scores we needed to be competitive against this strong field. It's a really big win for us and is just the tip of the iceberg for what these women can accomplish together."
Allsebrook is the first Scarlet Knight to capture individual medalist honors since
Emily Mills won the River Landing Classic last March. Mills' 879 total at River Landing was the program record for a 54-hole event until Allsebrook improved upon the mark by five strokes at Meadow Club. She was minus five on par fours, minus three on par fives, and minus one on par threes to win the 72-player tournament by five strokes.
"My first collegiate win is something I will never forget," said Allsebrook. "It was an amazing day out on the course and it felt great to watch my game become something I have aimed for, for a long time. I'm really proud of the team and the way we put together these three rounds of golf after battling our way through adverse practice conditions back home. It just shows what we are made of."
The Scarlet Knights bested the program's previous 54-hole mark of 879, set under Williams at the Nittany Lion Invitational this past September, by 11 strokes. RU registered a tournament-best 47 birdies and was minus nine on par five holes.
"We were all so excited to pull this out on the final day," said graduate co-captain
Ashleigh Greenham. "It's been a long time coming and is a testament to the hard work we have put in during practice and workouts. As a team we felt great this morning going into the final round and I'm so proud that we were able to finish strong."
Rutgers entered the final round in third place, four strokes off the pace, but overcame both Sacramento State and Tulsa on Tuesday. California placed second in the final standings, two strokes behind the Scarlet Knights.
