IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Rutgers women's track and field team claimed two medals on the third and final day of the 2019 Big Ten Track and Field Championships hosted by Iowa at at Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track.
Freshman
Reanda Richards won 400m hurdle gold to become the second Rutgers women's track & field student-athlete to claim a Big Ten title, while sophomore
Courteney Campbell captured a silver performance in the high jump.
Richards advanced to Sunday's finals after winning the opening heat of the 400m hurdles on Friday to automatically qualify and placed second overall during preliminaries with a time of 58.53.
On Sunday, the Roseland, New Jersey native took the title with a .01 second margin of victory over Maryland's Xahria Santiago to win the Big Ten title in a time of 57.68.
"Unbelievable. I have no words," said Richards following the victory. "I feel really good. It's a big deal as a freshman to come here and win Big Ten's. I'm really excited. I'm moving on to regionals in a couple of weeks. My goal is to keep PR-ing as the season goes by. The strategy was to get out pretty hard and try to maintain, no stuttering, because stuttering really slows you down, so that was my goal."
Richards is currently seventh in the country in the event having logged a time of 57.21 at the Florida Relays back on March 28.
The freshman Scarlet Knight is the second Rutgers women's track and field student-athlete "On The Banks" to bring home a Big Ten Championship. Former Scarlet Knight standout and all-american Gabrielle Farquharson captured the 2016 outdoor 100m, 2016 indoor 200m and 2015 indoor 200m titles. Farquharson was the first Big Ten Champion in any sport at Rutgers.
Joining Richards in the medal count was Campbell in the high jump.
The Kendall Park, New Jersey product was only one of four Big Ten student-athletes to clear the bar at 1.73m (5' 8"), doing so on her second attempt to take second overall in the field.

Halia Rosemond set a new PR in the discus. The senior Scarlet Knight threw for 45.38m (148' 11") to best her previous mark of 43.95m (144' 2") set in her runner-up performance at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships in April.

th overall in the team standings with Ohio State claiming the Big Ten team title followed by Indiana in second and host Iowa in third. Â
