PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's track and field team was named an all-academic team for the 2018-19 season while senior
Jenna Sobieski and redshirt junior
Rhonda Rogombe earned individual all-academic honors by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), it was announced on Monday.
To qualify for the team award, schools must attain at least a 3.00 cumulative team grade point average. The Scarlet Knights achieved a 3.18 grade point average for the academic year.
The two individual Scarlet Knights, Sobieski and Rogombe, qualified for academic honors after participating at the NCAA East Preliminary and holding a cumulative grade point average of a 3.25 or higher.
Sobieski, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree who majored in public health, had a standout senior season "On The Banks" putting her name into the Rutgers record books twice and earning her first trip to the NCAA East Regional. The Old Bridge, New Jersey product qualified for regional racing after collecting a time of 2:06.59 in the 800m at the Florida Relays last March marking the second fastest time in Scarlet Knight history. Additionally, Sobieski reached the finals of the 800m at the Big Ten Indoor Championship with the second fastest indoor time in the Rutgers logs, was the Metropolitan Outdoor Champion in the 800m and helped the Rutgers sprint medley relay team to a new school record at the 125
th running of the Penn Relays.
Rogombe, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten award winner and economics major, made her third-straight NCAA Regional appearance last season. The Charlestown, West Virginia native reached a season-best height of 1.78m (5' 10") at the Florida Relays in March, a mark that not only gave the Scarlet Knight the meet title, but was also only .01m short of matching the Rutgers outdoor record set in 1999. Rogombe also led RU at the ECAC Indoor Championships with the high jump crown.
As a team, Rutgers sent a total of five Scarlet Knights to the NCAA regional during the outdoor season with freshman
Reanda Richards, the Big Ten Track and Freshman of the Year, taking fourth in the 400m hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. In addition to Richards' Big Ten title in the 400m hurdles, sophomore Courtney Campbell took silver in the high jump, sophomore
Kathryn Campbell took sixth in the javelin and redshirt sophomore Lou Miahle broke the Rutgers steeplechase record for the third time in her career at the conference outdoor championship.
During in the indoor season, the Scarlet Knights repeated as the Metropolitan Indoor champions and saw two Scarlet Knights reach finals at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. Sobieski made a sixth-place 800m finals appearance and classmate
Oniesha Clarke reached the finals of the 60m for the second-straight season finishing eighth overall.
