AUSTIN, Texas – Reanda Richards concluded her first season "On The Banks" earning First Team All-American status as the freshman Scarlet Knight raced to a fourth place performance in the final of the 400m hurdles at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.
The Roseland, New Jersey product clocked in at 56.42 in the national final at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas, bettering her time from Thursday's semifinals by .45 seconds.
Richards was .11 seconds off her personal best in her NCAA finals performance. That PR won Richards the NCAA East Region title, was the second fastest time in the 400m hurdles this season entering the NCAA Championships and placed the freshman's name second in the Rutgers record books in the event.
USC's junior Anna Cockrell won the 2019 400m hurdle title in 55.23, followed by silver by Colorado's senior Gabby Scott in 56.04 and bronze by LSU's junior Brittley Humphrey in 56.11.
Richards, the Big Ten champion in the event, qualified for finals racing on Thursday night after placing third overall in the semifinals in a time of 56.87.
Richards is the first Rutgers women's track and field standout to capture all-america honors since Gabrielle Farquharson earned first team status in the long jump and second team merit in the 100m and 200m in 2016.
Altogether, the Scarlet Knight freshman has won six 400m hurdle titles for the Scarlet Knights during the 2019 outdoor season. In addition to NCAA Prelim and Big Ten titles, Richards also captured the top times at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championship, Florida Relays, Virginia Challenge and USF Bulls Invitational
