Weekly Athletic Communications Report: May 20

The Five Things to Know

1. Rutgers Athletics unveiled "The Relentless Pursuit of Excellence," a strategic vision that outlines a plan and details quantifying measures towards achieving determined goals over a five-year timeframe.

2. Rutgers Athletics celebrated the achievements of its 134 student-athletes who earned degrees in 2019 at the University's annual convocation ceremony, held Sunday afternoon at HighPoint.com Stadium.

3. The Office of Leadership Development and Strategic Partnerships (LDSP) in partnership with the Rutgers Graduate School of Education have begun a study abroad program.

4. Softball's Jess Hughes, Anyssa Iliopoulos and Katie Wingert have been named NFCA All-Region honorees, marking the third time in Rutgers softball history that at least three were named to All-Region teams, and the first time since 1999.

5. Rutgers Hall of Famer Kelvin Troy, who helped men's basketball to an NCAA berth and Sweet 16 appearance in 1979, became the first American inducted into the Basketball Ireland Hall of Fame.

No. 14 Rowing
• Earned highest team finish in program history, placing fourth at the Big Ten Championships on May 19.
• Second varsity four finished second in its event and the third varsity four took third to give RU its first-ever Big Ten rowing medals.
• Senior Sarah Johanek was named First Team All-Big Ten, sophomore Ella Toa was selected Second Team All-Big Ten and Olivia Maxton received the Sportsmanship Award.
• Team's previous highest finish at the conference championship was seventh which happened in 2018.
• The NCAA Selection Show will be held on Tuesday, May 21 at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com to announce the 11 at-large selections.

Softball (29-26)
• Concluded the 2019 season at the National Invitational Softball Championship with a loss to Marshall on Friday. It was the program's first appearance in a non-conference postseason tournament since 1996.
• Opened the NISC with a 2-1 victory over Appalachian State on Thursday morning, backed by Katie Wingert's 19th home run of the season and Whitney Jones' 12th win of the year in the circle. Rutgers fell to the playback round with a 1-0 loss to host Liberty on Thursday evening.

Baseball (20-31, 9-14)
• Dropped three games at No. 21 Indiana to end the season.
• Kevin Welsh, who entered with no career homers, slugged a long ball in each game of the three-game series. The last Scarlet Knight to achieve the feat was Pat Biserta at FIU in 2010.
• Concludes the season with nine Big Ten wins, tying the 2016 team for the most since joining the conference.

Men's Track and Field
• Eleven Scarlet Knights were selected for the 2019 NCAA East Regional Preliminary from May 23-25 in Jacksonville, Florida.
• Chris Mirabelli (javelin), John Mooers (discus), Perry Christie (high jump), Greg Harnett (javelin), Malachi Davis (triple jump), Jason Campbell (discus), and A'Nan Bridgett (long jump) will compete in field events.
• Taj Burgess (400m, 4x400m), Sterling Pierce (4x400m), Semaj Willis, and Chris Jenkins (4x400m) will hit the track for RU at the University of North Florida.

Women's Track & Field
• Will send five Scarlet Knights to the NCAA East Regional hosted by North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida on May 23-25. - Rhonda Rogombe, Courteney Campbell (High Jump), Kathryn Campbell (Javelin), Jenna Sobieski (800m) & Reanda Richards (400m Hurdles)
• Reanda Richards was named the Rutgers recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship award.

Women's Tennis (9-8, 1-6)
• Kat Muzik received the 2019 ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award for the Northeast region.

Men's Lacrosse
• Brian Brecht will serve as the Head Coach of the Divsion I/II South Team for the upcoming USILA North/South Senior All-Star Game.

Women's Basketball
• Coordinator of operations/video coordinator Brian Shank is working as a member of Team USA's support staff as trials take place for the U19 and Pan American women's national teams.

Women's Soccer
• Former Scarlet Knight Casey Murphy signed with Seattle Reign FC of the NWSL.
