No. 22 Men's Soccer Welcomes Michigan State in B1G Home Opener

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The No. 22 Rutgers men's soccer team welcomes Michigan State on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. for a Big Ten matchup at Yurcak Field.

- The Rutgers men's soccer team moved up two spots to No. 22 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 26 in the College Soccer News Poll, while remaining at No. 25 in the TopDrawerSoccer Poll on Tuesday.
- Also on Tuesday, the Scarlet Knights upped their unbeaten streak to eight with a 2-1 win over Saint Peter's. It is the longest season-opening unbeaten streak since 1985 when RU won eight-straight.
- Sophomore Pablo Ávila assisted on the first goal against the Peacocks and later put away his second game-winner of the season. He currently has seven points (3G, 1A) in 2019.
- A give and go from Pablo Ávila thru three Peacock defenders back to Jackson Temple straight up the box put Rutgers ahead 1-0 in the 22nd minute. It was Temple's team-leading fourth goal of the year.
- On the game-winner, Thomas DeVizio sent a cross from the right side to the center of the Saint Peter's net for Ávila to strike.
- Freshman netminder Oren Asher picked up a pair of critical second half saves to preserve the win including coming off the line to stop a surging Saint Peter's leading scorer Dominic Laws from adding in a tying goal from six yards out in the 55th minute.
- Ávila and Temple along with Bardia Kimiavi (Northwestern) and Devyn Etling (Ohio State) each have two game-winning goals in 2019 and are tied for the lead in the Big Ten in game-winning goals.
- Asher is currently second among Big Ten keepers in save percentage (.829) and goals against average (0.84).
- RU is one of 14 schools among the 206 Division I teams that sponsor the sport without a loss this season.

- Coming off a NCAA Tournament semifinal appearance, the Spartans are still looking for their first victory of 2019 coming to Yurcak Field with a 0-5-2 record.
- On Tuesday night, Michigan State fell 1-0 to No. 21 Notre Dame with the Irish getting onto the scoreboard in the 80th minute.
- All five of the Spartan's setbacks have been by one goal and three of MSU's seven games have gone into extra time.
- On the stat sheet redshirt sophomore midfielder Alex Shterenberg leads Michigan State with a goal and assist. Junior midfielder Michael Miller and freshman forward Alaa Algahim each have a goal.
- In goal, redshirt sophomore Hunter Morse holds a .822 save percentage and 1.07 goals against average having made a league-leading 37 stops.
