
Women’s Lacrosse Prepares for Midweek Matchup at Temple

Scarlet Knights take on Owls Wednesday in Philadelphia
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's lacrosse (1-0) readies for its first road game of 2020 against Temple (1-0) on Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia. A complimentary stream of the 3 p.m. matchup at Howarth Field will be available via OwlsTV.
Last Time Out
The Scarlet Knights registered their first win under head coach Melissa Lehman, as they downed LIU, 15-9, last Saturday at SHI Stadium. Senior captain Samantha Budd scored a game-high five goals, while sophomore Marin Hartshorn produced five points and dished out a career-high four assists to help RU defeat the Sharks.
Six rookies made their collegiate debut in the season opener, including five in the starting lineup. Freshmen Jenna Byrne (2 G, 1 A), Cassidy Spilis (2 G) and Janey Galski (1 G) all netted their first career goals, classmates Meghan Ball and Jessica Beneducci combined for six ground balls and six caused turnovers, and rookie net minder Alonna Gliksman secured nine saves for her first collegiate win.

Temple, picked fourth in the 2020 American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, registered a 17-8 victory over George Washington in its season opener last Saturday in Philadelphia. Olivia Thompson led the team with four goals, while Maddie Gebert added a hat trick for the Owls. Temple played all three of its goalies, as Erin Beal, Maryn Lowell and Olivia Martin combined for 14 saves.
Last Meeting
The Scarlet Knights dropped a heartbreaker to Temple last season, losing 12-10 to the Owls on Feb. 13, 2019 in Piscataway. Despite RU leading by as much as four goals, the game was tied at 10-10 with just 2:18 left. Thompson, who led with six goals, put Temple ahead in the closing minutes, while the Owls scored another goal after RU pulled its goalie to secure the win.
Budd netted a hat trick – one of her six in 2019 – in the game, while current Scarlet Knights Hartshorn and Taralyn Naslonski added two goals apiece.

Temple leads the all-time series against Rutgers, 23-7, which includes wins in the last five meetings. RU last defeated the Owls back in 2014, a tight 11-10 win in Piscataway. The schools have met in each of the past 10 seasons, with seven of those matchups decided by just two or less goals.
