Tennis Drops Big Ten Opener Against Maryland
Feb 14 | Women's Tennis
EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers tennis opened the Big Ten portion of their season on Friday, Feb. 14 with a 5-2 loss to the Maryland Terrapins.
"Today was a really close, tough match. Maryland competed well, and I thought we competed really well in singles," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "We need to turn around tomorrow and take our opportunities. This team is working incredibly hard and they're putting themselves in great situations; they just need to be confident and go for it."
The duo of senior Kat Muzik and junior Maya Jacobs started the day off strong for the Scarlet Knights with a 6-2 victory in the No. 3 spot over Eva Alexandrova and Saya Usui.
Sophomores Tess Fisher and Sydney Kaplan were downed in the No. 2 spot by Adela Josefova and Chloe Hamlin 6-3, which evened the playing field for both teams in the chase for the doubles point.
In the No. 1 spot, sophomores Kristiana Zahare and Sydney Jones brought opponents Ayana Akli and Kate Yemelyanenka into a tie breaker, ultimately falling 7-6 (7-4).
Finishing first in singles and tying the team score at one all was Kaplan (No. 4) with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vera Markovic.
Pushing the Scarlet Knights ahead of the Terps was senior Jaci Cochrane (No. 6) defeating Zoe Kulkarni 6-1, 6-3.
Rutgers returns to the East Brunswick Racquet Club Saturday, Feb. 15 at 4:00 p.m. as they take on UPenn.
