1992 MLB Draft pick left as Rutgers’ career leader in home runs and RBIs
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball remembers Angel Echevarria, who passed away Friday at age 48. A three-year letterwinner for the Scarlet Knights from 1990-92, leaving as the program's all-time leader in home runs and RBIs, Echevarria played seven seasons in the major leagues.
From Bridgeport, Connecticut, Echevarria helped RU win the Atlantic 10 East Division all three seasons and claim the Atlantic 10 Tournament title in 1990 and 1991. The Scarlet Knights came within one win of the College World Series in 1990 competing in the NCAA East Regional and also advanced to the NCAA Central Regional in 1991. The outfielder was a three-time All-Atlantic 10 honoree, with first-team selections as a freshman and junior.
Echevarria slugged 31 career home runs to set the school record at the time, still ranking fourth in the program's record book. He also currently sits sixth with 145 career RBIs and 10th with 329 total bases.
Echevarria made an immediate impact at the collegiate level in 1990 with a team-high nine homers before blasting 12 in 1991, tied for seventh-most in a season in school history, and 10 in 1992 to lead Rutgers each year.
Drafted in the 17th round the 1992 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies, Echevarria made his MLB debut on July 15, 1996 for the organization. He also played for the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs during his seven seasons in the big leagues.
Echevarria attended Bassick High School in Connecticut.
