Feb 20 | Women's Tennis
EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers tennis was edged in a neck-in-neck battle with Penn State by a score of 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. Behind by a score of 3-0, the Scarlet Knights rallied three straight singles points to tie, 3-3. However, the Nittany Lions would sneak away with the victory.
"Disappointing loss, but overall really proud of the effort," said Head Coach Hilary Ritchie. "We showed a lot of improvement from last weekend and we were playing a lot more offensively and taking our chances. Tomorrow is another match and another opportunity. We are going to have to bounce back quickly."
Opening as a tight match from the onset, the teams raced for the doubles point. With a win at the No. 1 position for Penn State, neck-in-neck battles at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots left the team point up for grabs.
Junior Tess Fisher and freshman Alisa Prinyarux rallied until the end at the No. 2, however, the Nittany Lions edged out a 7-5 win to claim the doubles point and move in front 1-0. Senior Jaci Cochrane and freshman Chloe Brown were knotted at 6-6 with their opponents at the No. 2 spot at the end of doubles play.
Moving into singles five of the six matchups entered a third set. Junior Sydney Kaplan rallied from a setback in set one to claim a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over her opponent. She secured a point for RU and cut into a 3-1 PSU advantage.
Prinyarux followed with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 singles spot, setting the score a 3-2 with RU up in the third-sets of the No. 2 and No. 5 singles spots.
At the No. 5 spot, Brown held on for a 1-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5) victory to tie the match at 3-3. Ultimately, the Nittany Lions snuck away with a tight three-set win in the final singles spot.
The wins for Brown and Prinyaraux marked the first Big Ten dual victories in singles action for the rookies.
Up next, Rutgers remains home for a matchup with Ohio State on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 12 PM.
