Field Hockey Tops Ohio State In Overtime
Feb 28 | Field Hockey
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Rutgers field hockey wrapped up its opening weekend at B1G at the Beach with a 2-0 record, taking down Ohio State 2-1 in overtime on Sunday morning. Milena Redlingshoefer tallied the game-winning goal, while Kassidy Shetler also scored for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers outshot OSU 12-10. Gianna Glatz made four saves in goal, while Abby Regn also had a defensive save.
"Today's game was a real battle, head coach Meredith Civico said. "We had some great moments, but we also have many things to work on and to improve. Regardless of that, I'm so proud of the team and how they found a way to win. It was a real team effort and it's great to be 2-0 in the Big Ten."
Rutgers struck first in the early going. Capitalizing on a penalty corner, the ball was bouncing around in the crease, and Kassidy Shetler came in from the back side to put it home and put the Scarlet Knights in front. That goal would be the only scoring in the first half and gave the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead at the break.
The Scarlet Knights controlled much of the play in the first half, but OSU countered with pressure in the third quarter. OSU amped up the pressure, but Rutgers defense continued to hold strong. RU turned away multiple penalty corner attempts in the frame before the Buckeyes finally broke through on one with five minutes left in the frame. An OSU corner was inserted but missed at the top, leading to a broken play, but the ball found an open player on the right side to tie the game.
Rutgers had a great chance with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter off a penalty corner, but it was saved by the OSU goalkeeper. 60 minutes would not be enough and the game headed to overtime.
Rutgers had two penalty corners early in OT, but couldn't find the back of the net off of good scoring opportunities. Finally late in the session, Redlingshoefer carried around the end line and put home the game-winner.
The Scarlet Knights will return to Virginia Beach next weekend for another two games on B1G at The Beach. RU will face Iowa on Friday at 11 a.m., then face Ohio State again on Sunday at 3 p.m.
