COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 4 Rutgers men's lacrosse battled on the road at No. 3 Maryland, but was undone by a late Terps run in a 19-12 loss on Saturday afternoon.
Adam Charalambides led the way with four goals, while
Kieran Mullins had three goals and two assists.
David Sprock added two goals and two assists.
Ross Scott,
Ryan Gallagher and
Shane Knobloch also tallied in the game.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, as RU used a 5-2 run to take a 7-6 lead. At halftime, the score was tied at 9-9.
A low scoring third quarter followed. After 45 minutes, the home team had a slim-one goal lead. However, an 8-2 run in the final frame was the difference in the game.
"We played well in the first half," head coach
Brian Brecht said. "We envisioned it being a close, back-and-forth game, and it was at 9-9 at halftime. In the third quarter, I would have like to have capitalized on a couple more opportunities, but defensively, we held it to a two-goal game. But just not enough in the fourth quarter to get a road win against a very talented team. At the end of the day, I think we've been playing well offensively, clearing the ball, not having a lot of turnovers. Maryland made us pay for some of our mistakes, and that was probably the biggest takeway today."
Next up for the Scarlet Knights is a trip to Johns Hopkins. That game next Saturday will be streamed on ESPN3, and tape-delayed to air the following day on ESPNU.
