VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Rutgers field hockey battled a tough Iowa Hawkeyes squad on Friday, ultimately dropping a 1-0 decision for the team's first loss of the season.
Both teams entered the matchup undefeated, after RU had defeated Indiana and Ohio State on the opening weekend of action to start off 2-0. Ultimately, it was the Hawkeyes who earned their third straight 1-0 victory this season.
The first half was very evenly played. The Scarlet Knights defense was stout, and the two squads headed into the intermission still scoreless.
The third quarter remained scoreless before the Hawkeyes finally broke through in the fourth quarter. With six minutes remaining, Iowa earned a penalty corner and capitalized with the game's first and only goal, as Lokke Stribos sent a hard shot into the top corner.
Through three games, Rutgers has allowed just two goals.
Gianna Glatz, the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, made three saves in the game.Â
Iowa now leads the all-time series 8-3-1, even though Rutgers has won three of the past five meetings.
Next up for the Scarlet Knights is a fourth and final contest at B1G at The Beach. The team remains in Virginia for a Sunday matchup at 3 p.m. against Ohio State. That game is a rematch of an opening weekend meeting, which RU
won 2-1 in overtime on a goal from
Milena Redlingshoefer.
