Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 6 Field Hockey Drops Game at No. 12 Maryland Thursday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 6 Rutgers field hockey fell to No. 12 Maryland by a 4-2 margin on Thursday evening. Liz Romano and Milena Redlingshoefer scored the goals for the Scarlet Knights.

The game was the last this season to count towards the conference standings, with RU finishing with a 5-3 record in Big Ten play. The five conference wins were Rutgers' most league victories since joining the Big Ten.

The contest was fairly even throughout the game. Rutgers had a 15-12 advantage in shots and corners were even at 9-9.

Rutgers came out of the game with great offensive pressure and struck first, scoring just four minutes into the contest. On the team's second corner opportunity of the day, Liz Romano collected a rebound and sent in a shot to give RU an early 1-0 advantage.

The Scarlet Knights held a 4-1 advantage in the opening quarter in shots on goal. In the second quarter, the Terps answered back. Again in was a penalty corner opportunity that led to the scoring, as the home team was able to capitalize and poke the ball in to even the score at 1-1 late in the second frame.

Just prior to halftime, the Terps struck again. The home team was awarded an untimed penalty corner to finish out the opening half, and then recieved a penalty stroke from the resulting play. Maryland scored on that stroke, which was the final play of the first half, giving the Terrapins a 2-1 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, it was another penalty corner that led to a Maryland goal. The Terps took a 3-1 lead midway through the third stanza, and then scored again on a penalty corner to take a 4-1 lead after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Milena Redlingshoefer tallied for RU. Again it was a penalty corner coming into play, with Katie Larmour and Kerrie Burns picking up asssists on the score. The Scarlet Knights continued to press, nearly scoring another goal, but it was confirmed upon video review that the shot did not cross the goal line. The Terps defense held strong down the stretch to ensure the victory.

The four goals were the most RU has given up in a game this season. Entering the game, the Scarlet Knights had outscored opponents 22-7 and were fourth nationally with a 0.56 goals-against-average as a team.

Rutgers will conclude the regular season on Saturday at Maryland. That game will be at 12 p.m. With Saturday's game not counting towards the conference standings, the bracket for next week's Big Ten Conference Tournament is expected to be released on Friday following the conclusion of league play.
