No. 11 Rowing Caps Big Ten Invitational With Five More Wins
Apr 18 | Women's Rowing
BETHEL, Ohio – No. 11 Rutgers rowing won another five races on Sunday morning to run its victory total to 12 during the Big Ten Invitational on Harsha Lake, which featured 11 nationally ranked squads out of the 16 competing teams.
Scarlet Knight boats entered 21 races spanning two days on Harsha Lake, and crossed the line first in 12 of them. Nearly every win came against groups with other nationally ranked programs.
"I'm really proud of our entire team and the way we represented Rutgers this weekend," said head coach Justin Price. "The inaugural Big Ten Invitational allowed us to race many of the top ranked teams in the country and served as a valuable check point as we head toward our championship racing in May. It is clear we are on the right track and we look forward to continuing our trajectory."
After starting Saturday with a thrilling 1.5-second win over No. 6 Michigan, the Rutgers First Varsity 8 crew also launched Sunday's action with a victory – beating No. 12 Indiana by six seconds while also topping No. 20 Syracuse and No. 18 Washington State. The top Varsity 8 boat's only loss of the weekend was by less than a second to No. 4 Virginia on Saturday.
The Second Varsity 8 followed suit with a 4.4-second triumph on Sunday over the Hoosiers, Orange, and Cougars, winning their second race of the weekend.
The Second and Third Varsity 4 squads went for back-to-back wins over No. 7 Alabama and No. 16 Iowa, respectively. The First Novice 8 boat, which has been racing up a category most of this season, did so again and won in convincing fashion by seven seconds over Notre Dame, No. 17 Minnesota, and Michigan State to close out the weekend's racing slate.
The RU Second Novice 8 crew, also punching up a class, finished second by just 3.2 seconds behind No. 6 Michigan, but in front of No. 16 Iowa and No. 3 Ohio State.
With the wins over NCAA Championship-caliber teams at a championship style event, the Scarlet Knights will take a weekend off from competition before firing up the run toward May's big regattas. Rutgers will host Syracuse on Sunday, May 2 on Mercer Lake, the last tune-up before the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis on May 16.
