II HOW THEY GOT HERE: The Scarlet Knights clinched the No. 5 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, their highest finish since tying for third at the end of the 2015 campaign and taking the four-seed into the conference tourney. The 4-4 record in Big Ten play matches the Scarlet Knights' best B1G record from that 2015 season.
III LAST TIME OUT: Rutgers finished the 2021 Spring regular season in victorious style with a 1-0 shutout of Northwestern on Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field.
Kyle Galloway celebrated his Senior Day by scoring the lone goal of the match in the 58
th minute, finishing a pass from freshman
Gabriel Addo. Sophomore goalkeeper
Oren Asher made four saves, including a sprawling, point-blank stop in the 81
st minute, to record his fourth shutout of the season.
IV SCOUTING THE TERPS: Maryland is undefeated at 4-0-1 since a 2-0 loss at Rutgers on March 3, as part of an 0-3 start to the season. Maryland both allows and scores an average of 1.38 goals per game. Bin, Bender, and defender Brett St. Martin were all named Second Team All-Big Ten on Friday.
V HISTORY VS. MARYLAND
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 3, 2021) - Senior
Ritchie Barry scored both goals and sophomore
Oren Asher led the defense to its third shutout as Rutgers earned the 2-0 victory over Maryland, the first over the Terrapins since joining the Big Ten, on Wednesday afternoon outdoors at the Scarlet Knights Club Field. Starting 3-1 under second-year head coach
Jim McElderry, the Scarlet Knights were off to their best start in the Big Ten since joining the conference in 2014.
Series: Maryland is 10-2 all-time against Rutgers since 1960 and had a 10-match winning streak snapped when Rutgers won 2-0 earlier this year.
VI RITCHIE ROLLIN': Ritchie Barry has been selected to the All-Big Ten Second Team as a forward for his performance during the Spring 2021 season. Barry, playing his first season as a Scarlet Knight after transferring from St. Joseph's, is ranked third in the Big Ten with four goals this season. That gives him 17 goals for his collegiate career. He has one multigoal game this season, while two of his goals have gone down as game-winners for Rutgers - accounting for half of its wins this Spring.
VII TO ASHER WE SHALL RETURN: Sophomore goalkeeper
Oren Asher, who is ranked second in the Big Ten with four shutouts, earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for a second time this season after his 2-0 shutout against Maryland and an eight-save performance in the 1-0 setback to No. 9 Michigan. Also earning the distinction after opening week on Feb. 24, Asher became the first Scarlet Knights to earn multiple Defensive Player of the Week awards from the Big Ten, and the first Scarlet Knight overall to earn multiple weekly conference awards in a season since Jason Wright in 2015.
VIII SPREAD THE LOVE: With
Gabriel Addo picking up his first point of the season last match on an assist in the 1-0 win over Northwestern, eight different Scarlet Knights now have at least one point. On the defensive end of the field, the backs and goalkeeper
Oren Asher have a strong share of Rutgers' win with all four coming by way of shutout.
IX PLAYERS TO WATCH: The Big Ten Conference announced
Pablo Avila,
Hugo Le Guennec and
Jackson Temple as Rutgers Players to Watch for the 2021 Spring Season. Avila, a junior from Terrassa, Spain, is returning as the team's leading point scorer with six goals and two assists, earning a nod to the All-Big Ten Second Team. Le Guennec and Temple were named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2019, and return with big expectations for their sophomore years "On the Banks." Le Guennec, a back out of Massy, France, contributed to Rutgers' four shutouts and an exceptional 0.84 goals-against average during the 6-0-2 start. Temple, a unanimous selection to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, was the team's second-leading point scorer with five goals.
