SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 19 Rutgers field hockey battled a ranked foe on the road Sunday, ultimately falling 4-2 at No. 12 Syracuse. Rutgers' was led by goals from Iris Langejans, Lucy Bannatyne and Indy van Ek, but the home team broke through in the fourth quarter to claim the win.

Syracuse led 14-9 in shots and 8-4 in corners in the game. Sophia Howard made four saves for RU.

Rutgers took control of the game from the outset. While the game was scoreless after one quarter, RU had a shot advantage of 5-0.

In the 22^nd minute of action, Rutgers struck first. RU earned a penalty corner, and the initial shot from the top by Puck Winter was saved. The ball rolled to the goalkeeper's right, and after inserting the corner, Iris Langejans got to the spot and hit a reverse chip into the open cage to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead.

Early in the third quarter, Syracuse struck back. The Orange attacked the circle and took an initial shot that was saved. The home team crashed to the net though and were able to put home a rebound to even the score at 1-1.

With just under four minutes left in the third quarter, Syracuse went in front 2-1. The shot from a corner was deflected in front to put the home team in front.

However, RU answered right back. The Scarlet Knights earned a corner, and Marique Dieudonne took a shot from the top. Lucy Bannatyne was well-placed in front of the goal to redirect the ball into the net and even the game at 2-2. The goal came just 2:09 after Syracuse had moved in front, and the game went into the fourth quarter even after RU's first shot of the third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, the home team countered with another goal. Syracuse moved rapidly into the circle and put a quick shot past the defense to retake the lead at 3-2. The goal was the third tally over just under five minutes of game time, turning a 1-1 game to a 3-2 game in that span between the end of the third quarter and the opening minute of the fourth.

Cuse added an insurance tally in the fourth quarter. A long cross-field pass found a player cutting to the front of the net, and the home team took a 4-2 lead with eight minute to play in the fourth quarter.

RU refused to relent, and added a late tally. Iris Langejans carried towards the cage and sent a pass in front. Indy van Ek got her stick on it and got RU back within 4-3 with under two minutes left. However, RU was unable to get another equalizer and fell, 4-3.

Rutgers returns home for two home games next weekend to finish the regular season. The Scarlet Knights host No. 5 Penn State on Friday, a 3 p.m. contest that will air nationally on Big Ten Network. On Sunday, RU hosts No. 17 James Madison for Senior Day, a 1 p.m. game.

Iris Langejans recorded her fourth goal of the season, tying Marique Dieudonne for second on the team.
Langejans and Dieudonne each had an assist in the game.
Bannatyne recorded her second career goal against Syracuse. Last season, she provided the game-winning tally in a double-overtime victory for RU.
Rutgers has scored 10 goals over its last four games after scoring just 15 goals in its first 11 games.
