Scarlet Knights host LaSalle (Wednesday) and No. 15 UConn (Friday)
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 8 Rutgers field hockey will look to regroup following the hosting of the "Battle on the Banks" Tournament. The Scarlet Knights are right back to work this week ahead of home games on Wednesday (La Salle, 4 p.m.) and Friday (UConn, 2 p.m.).
Both games will be streamed by B1G+. Wednesday will be Back to School Day featuring giveaways for local youth teams. Friday will be "Bark in the Bauer" featuring dog raffles and giveaways.
About Rutgers
Rutgers hosted a season-opening tournament for the first time, welcoming over 1,000 fans to Piscataway across three days for the "Battle on the Banks" Tournament. The Scarlet Knights battled against two top-20 ranked teams in No. 18 Duke and No. 16 St. Joe's and came away still looking for their first win of the season. A young Scarlet Knights squad debuted seven newcomers over the weekend and had five players make their first collegiate start.
Marique Dieudonne, Puck Winter, Elise Pettisani, Olivia Weir, Indy van Ek, Vicky Jure and Dani Gindville all donned a Scarlet Knights uniform for their first official collegiate game action. Dieudonne, Winter, Jure, Pettisani and Amanda Beck all garnered their first collegiate start on the weekend, as RU graduated eight players to make at least 12 starts last season.
A still-growing RU team battled the Blue Devils Friday to the bitter end, with a stellar 10 saves from new starting goalkeeper Sophia Howard, making just the third start of her career. Rachel Houston tallied for the Scarlet Knights, who pushed evenly with a veteran Duke squad throughout two overtimes, but the home team was just unable to come away with the victory at the conclusion of a penalty shootout. On Sunday, RU was again tied, 0-0, at halftime, before No. 18 St. Joe's persevered in the second half to claim the victory.
"This weekend was obviously not how we anticipated starting the 2022 season. We have a very young squad and are rebuilding. However, this team is dedicated, committed and hard working. They have an incredible desire to learn and improve. We have a strong culture and foundation here at Rutgers and I believe this team will only get better the more we compete together."
About La Salle
Rutgers will face La Salle for the first time since 2013, marking the second matchup in Meredith Civico's 11 years as the RU head coach. The Scarlet Knights own a 15-2-1 advantage in the all-time series against the Explorers, with a three-game winning streak.
Following a 7-10 mark last year in the first season under head coach Martu Loncarica, La Salle has opened the season with a 2-0 record following road victories at Bryant (4-1) and Merrimack (3-1). Tatum Johnson, who led La Salle last season with 10 goals and seven assists, is off to the early team lead once again with three goals and an assist on opening weekend. La Salle brought back its six top scorers from last season, along with goalkeeper Ryan Curley, and were tabbed fifth in the Preseason A-10 Poll.
About UConn
UConn, ranked No. 15 nationally, will mark the third ranked team in four games for RU, who currently project to open the season against ranked teams in seven of 10 games to open the season, with 11 of their opponents ranked in the preseason poll.
UConn began the season with home wins over UMass Lowell (2-0) and Monmouth (2-1). Following an 11-win season that saw a second-place finish in the BIG EAST, the Huskies returned five of their top six scorers, including BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-Conference selection Claire Jandewerth, both preseason all-conference pick last season. The team also brought back four-time All-BIG EAST goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher, who boasts a 78.9% save percentage and 1.02 goals-against-average for her 84-game career.
The Huskies hold a 30-3-1 advantage in a lengthy all-time series, which includes a meeting in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. The last meeting between the two teams was last season on September 3, where RU claimed a 2-1 win in double-overtime. RU went to Storrs and took down the sixth-ranked Huskies via a penalty stroke goal in the second extra session, while Carly Snarksi potted her first career goal in the opening half.
Both games will be streamed by B1G+. Wednesday will be Back to School Day featuring giveaways for local youth teams. Friday will be "Bark in the Bauer" featuring dog raffles and giveaways.
