No. 5 Field Hockey Dropped by No. 8 Maryland in Big Ten Tournament Semifinals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 5 ranked and No. 2 seed Rutgers field hockey saw its Big Ten Tournament run end on Friday, falling 2-1 to No. No. 3 seed and No. 8 ranked Maryland. RU fell to 16-3 overall and Maryland improved to 16-4.
Lucy Bannatyne had the RU goal, with Iris Langejans collecting the assist. After that goal, RU had a 1-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter. However, the Terps scored two fourth quarter goals to grab the win and move on.
Sophia Howard had six saves. Maryland led 13-10 in shots and 6-5 in corners.
The game was scoreless through one period. Maryland had a couple early chances, but the RU backline held strong.
Rutgers gained the game's first corner at the 5:02 mark of the second quarter, but the shot was blocked. After a first half with just seven total shots, the teams were tied, 0-0, at halftime.
Rutgers gained a pair of early third quarter corners, placing their first shot on goal that bounced off the Maryland goalkeeper's head, but were unable to convert for a goal.
Midway through the third quarter, two RU players teamed up for a spectacular goal. The play started in the defensive end, where Big Ten Player of the Year Iris Langejans took the ball away from the Maryland player. Langejans raced down the field and sent a pass across into the circle. Lucy Bannatyne collected it, and slammed home a reverse chip, blasting the ball past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.
Later in the quarter, the Scarlet Knights went down to nine players after getting multiple cards. The Terps looked to strike with multiple penalty corners, but Sophia Howard kicked a shot away to halt the Terps, and the game headed to the fourth corner with a 1-0 RU lead.
Rutgers nearly pushed across another tally, but a defensive save by the Maryland back just kept the ball out of the net. On the counterattack, Maryland tied the game at 1-1 with 9:43 left in the fourth quarter. The Terps pushed forward, sent a pass to the goalkeeper's left, and a diving shot went home to equalize.
The Terps then added another tally. After a corner, RU denied the initial two attempts, but the rebound was put home.
Rutgers gained a corner at the 4:40 and had a series of attempts at the goal, but were denied.
Rutgers' pulled its goalkeeper at the 2:05 mark for an extra field player, pressing to tie the game, but were unable to score.
Rutgers will now await a potential NCAA tournament at-large bid with the unveiling of the 2023 NCAA Field Hockey Championship tournament bracket on Sunday night. The 18-team field will be revealed at 10 p.m. on NCAA.com.
