Men’s Basketball to Participate in NIT as a No. 1 Seed vs. Hofstra Tuesday at 7 PM

PISCATAWAY, N.J. Rutgers men's basketball team accepted a bid to participate in the 2023 NIT Tournament.

Rutgers was seeded No. 1 in the tournament and will take on Hofstra at 7 p.m. The game will broadcast live on ESPNU.

"I want Caleb (McConnell) and Paul (Mulcahy) and the rest of our seniors to play as many games as they can," head coach Steve Pikiell said on accepting the bid. "I obviously don't want this season to end. This group has done a lot of great things for us and to have an opportunity to play a home game for those guys would be very important. I would love for them to take advantage of postseason play. I'm not apologizing for postseason play here at Rutgers, but obviously our goal in the beginning of the year was the NCAA tournament, but we will have to shift quickly."

The full 32-team field was released on Sunday on ESPNU. The higher-seeded team in each game will host the matchups until the semifinals of the tournament. The semifinal and championship game will be held at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For the third-straight season, Rutgers men's basketball is heading into postseason play. It marks the 15th time in RU history that the Scarlet Knights will compete in the NIT as Rutgers last participated in the tournament in 2006.

The Scarlet Knights made it to the NIT Championship in 2004, losing to Michigan 62-55 in the finals. Rutgers holds a (16-13) overall record in the NIT Tournament in school history.

The 2022-23 Scarlet Knights finished this regular season with a (19-14) record, including ten Big Ten wins. The Scarlet Knights guaranteed their fourth-consecutive winning season.

Rutgers beat the No. 1 team in the country for the second-straight year which marked one of the best road wins in the country at Mackey Arena against Purdue. Pikiell collected his 100th win at Rutgers and 300th win overall as a head coach earlier this year. RU collected ten wins against quad 1 and quad 2 opponents.

Pikiell has one NIT Championship under his belt as a player and helped settle the 51st annual National Invitation Tournament by nailing a crucial 3-point field goal that snapped a 46-46 tie and helped lift the Connecticut Huskies to a 72-67 victory over Ohio State at Madison Square Garden in 1988. The victory helped UConn win it's first postseason tournament in school history.

Pikiell will prepare his current team for the NIT Tournament beginning with practice on Monday.

"It is like any game," Pikiell said. "You must be ready to get your team off the mat. I want them to know I played in the NIT myself as a player and we had an unbelievable run when I was at the University of Connecticut in 1988. It was one of the great experiences that I had in basketball.  Today they don't want to hear those things, but tomorrow we will get them in a room and try to make sure they understand that a lot of teams have hung up their uniforms and we have a chance to keep playing as a group. This group has fought through a lot the last four years and fought through a lot of obstacles. I expect them to do the same here and we will be honored if we get an opportunity to keep playing."
