Miami, Fla. – Rutgers softball split day one of the Panther Invitational on Friday with a no-hitter against Army West Point and a loss to No. 10 Duke with the two squads coming in tied 1-1 into the game's final inning.
The Scarlet Knights opened the day with a 2-0 victory over the Black Knights behind a no-hitter from Mattie Boyd.
Rutgers went in front against the top ten Blue Devils early as Katie Wingert's sixth home run in seven games put RU up after two innings. Duke, however, tied the game up in the fifth on a home run of their own and added three unearned runs in the seventh to avoid an upset loss.
With the split on the day, Rutgers moved to 5-2 on the year.
Rutgers 2, Army West Point 0
- Mattie Boyd tossed a no-hitter in her third complete-game victory of the year. The junior Scarlet Knight collected nine strikeouts and only allowed three Black Knights to reach base.
- Both Rutgers' runs came off back-to-back RBI doubles off the bats of Katie Wingert and Jillian Anderson.
- Rutgers went up 2-0 with two outs in the first inning. While it wasn't a home run for Katie Wingert, the Scarlet Knight hit the wall in center field for an RBI double. Jillian Anderson then made it back-to-back RBI doubles for the early two-run edge.
- Army went three up, three down in the first three innings not getting on base until the top of the fourth. The Black Knights put base runners on with a walk and fielder's choice in the inning and would also reach on a walk in the fifth.
- Boyd kept Army at bay with two strikeouts in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings en route to racking up nine total for the first RU no-hitter since March 17, 2022.
No. 10 Duke 4, Rutgers 1
- Katie Wingert went 1-for-2 adding her sixth home run of the year moving her into sole possession of second on the all-time Rutgers home run leaders list with 35 career dingers. She needs five more home runs to tie Jackie Bates (2012-15) as the Scarlet Knights' all-time home runs leader.
- Payton Lincavage and Jillian Anderson also collected hits against the Blue Devils
- Morgan Smith dropped to 2-1 on the year tossing 6.0 innings allowing only one earned run on five hits. The senior Scarlet Knight fanned seven along the way.
- Katie Wingert led off the second inning taking her first pitch for a ride over the left-center wall. It was only the second run Duke pitcher Jala Wright has given up in four appearances.
- Duke's Kelly Torres tied the ballgame up in the top of the fifth leading off with a long ball to left center.
- An error and fielder's choice allowed the Blue Devils to put runners on first and second. Torres bunted but a bad catch kept play in action and allowed Aminah Vega to score from second base. Amiah Burgess, the following Duke batter, doubled to left center to push across two more runs.
The Rutgers softball team returns to action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. against host FIU. The Scarlet Knights will then either play in the No. 2 vs No. 3 game at 3 p.m. or No. 1 vs. No. 4 contest at 5:30 p.m. Â
