PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Monday, August 19) – Graduate student forward
Zach Martini and redshirt senior guard
Jeremiah Williams were named the captains of the 2024-25 Scarlet Knights head coach
Steve Pikiell announced on Monday.
Williams, a 6-foot-4, 177-pound guard from Chicago will enter his fifth collegiate season, following one season at Rutgers, two seasons (2020-21 and 2021-22) at Temple, and spending the 2022-23 season on the roster of Iowa State.
"Being a captain means a lot to me," Williams said. "Rutgers has embraced me since Day 1 and I want to be the best leader I can be this season in efforts to repay Rutgers Nation back for what they have done for my career."
Martini was the first addition to the Rutgers roster via the transfer portal when he joined the squad on April 9 from Princeton. Martini spent his previous four years at Princeton.
"What excites me the most about being captain this year is the opportunity to lead Rutgers into one of the most highly anticipated seasons in school history," Martini said. "Being an upperclassman, I know what sacrifices it takes to win at the highest level and I know winning in the Big Ten Conference won't be easy. I am thankful for our coaching staff putting the faith in me to help lead this team."
Williams is one of three returners from last year's squad and was one of the most valuable players in 2023-24. Williams led last year's team with 12.2 points per game and started 11 of the final 12 games of the season. Upon his return, he was a key contributor to the Scarlet Knights's four-game winning streak, landing him as the Big Ten's Player of the Week.
Standing at 6-foot-7 and 235 pounds, Martini brings a wealth of experience to the Scarlet Knights. During the 2023-24 season, the Warren, N.J. native started in all 29 games, averaging 8.4 points per game. He connected on 38.5 percent of his three-point attempts, ranking him seventh among the top shooters in the Ivy League. He made 60 three-pointers last season. He was a key contributor to Princeton's Sweet 16 run two seasons ago.
"Jeremiah has done a great job of getting a real pulse for our team and being a true leader on the court, off the court, and in the weight room," head coach
Steve Pikiell said on the Pikiell Podcast with Jerry Recco. "Zach wanted to be here from the beginning, being from New Jersey. He has jumped right in and has brought an element of toughness that we were missing."
