4-0 Victory Behind Two Goals from Olivia Fraticelli
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 14 Rutgers field hockey played its third straight Big Ten road game on Friday afternoon at Indiana. The Scarlet Knights came out firing offensively from the get-go and took down the Hoosiers by a final score of 4-0.
Olivia Fraticelli led the offensive with two goals. The Scarlet Knights also received goals from Puck Winter and Julia Vinas Nieto, who scored her first collegiate goal. Emily Nicholls made three saves for her fourth time starting a shutout this season, second time in Big Ten play and third time in the past four games.
With the win, the Scarlet Knights improved to 8-5 overall and are now 3-1 in league play. The loss dropped IU to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Rutgers improved to 12-4 all-time against Indiana, with their first road win in Bloomington since 2018. RU has won four of the past five games, outscoring opponents 20-3 in that stretch.
Rutgers scored early, capitalizing on a penalty corner just five minutes into the game. Puck Winter inserted the corner towards the top to Paulina Niklaus. Then, Niklaus sent the ball towards the back post, where Winter ran over from her inserter position, and lunged in to redirect the ball into the net for the game's first goal.
The Scarlet Knights added two goals in the second quarter to pad their ledger. On the first, RU won possession in the corner. Vicky Jure sent a long pass into the circle, Dani Gindville touched a pass over to Julia Vinas Nieto, and the freshman finished off a shot for her first career goal.
Then, Olivia Fraticelli added the third goal of the day for the visitors. Freshman Martha Goodridge sent her a pass to the front from the back line, and Fraticelli finished off her team-leading seventh goal of the season for a 3-0 halftime lead for the visitors.
Puck Winter put up another defensive save off a corner attempt in the third quarter, keeping the home team scoreless.
In the fourth quarter, Olivia Fraticelli added another goal. She took a pass from Dani Gindville and sent home a shot for the fourth RU goal. Fraticelli's third multi-goal game of the year gave her five goals across the past four games and a team-leading eight tallies on the season.
The RU defense held strong down the stretch to secure the win. Indiana had 12 shots on the day and six corners, but couldn't capitalize.
