John Gorman serves as Rutgers' defensive coordinator. He has completed two seasons "On the Banks". With Gorman on staff, Rutgers is 19-10.
In 2018, Gorman's second season, RU went 9-6. He mentored senior defenseman Michael Rexode, who was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and a Second Team All-American. Also, senior defenseman Alex Bronzo was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team. RU led the Big Ten with 6.47 caused turnovers per game and was third in scoring defense.
In his first season, the Scarlet Knights won 10 games, and saw the defense improve by nearly a goal per game, while finishing third in the nation with 9.71 CTs/game. He mentored junior defenseman Michael Rexrode to a consensus Third Team All-American season.
Gorman came to RU after four seasons at Hofstra. Gorman had been mentoring the Pride defensive units as they have established themselves among the top groups in the nation, ranking in the top-12 in the NCAA for goals against average each season. In his first season, the team was No. 3 in the country with 7.9 goals allowed per game, and never averaged above 8.5 goals-against under his tutelage, ranking third, seventh, eighth and 12th. The Lindenhurst, New York native was in charge of coordinating the defense and man-down unit, and also ran the substitution box.
While Gorman was at Hofstra, the squad compiled a 32-27 record. This past season they were ranked as high as No. 8 in the country and led the CAA in ground balls per game.
Prior to Hofstra, Gorman served as an assistant varsity lacrosse coach at South Side High School on Long Island from 2007 to 2012 while also serving as a physical education teacher. He also presided over multiple camps in Hempstead, N.Y.
As a player, Gorman was a NJCAA All-America second team selection in his one season at Nassau Community College. A team captain, he led the Lions to the division championship and the NJCAA national semifinals.
He then spent three seasons a midfielder at Hofstra. He was part of Hofstra's 2006 team that posted a school record 17 wins, won the Colonial Athletic Association championship and advanced to the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship quarterfinals. As a senior captain in 2007, Gorman started all 14 games, scooped up 20 ground balls and received the Bengt Barbaccia Award for the second consecutive year. He also earned the David McCarthy Scholarship Award and the 2007 Hofstra University Outstanding Senior Athlete Award. In forty collegiate games at HU, Gorman collected 30 ground balls with one assist.
