Havalchak Named Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America
Dec 16 | Men's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers junior goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) has been named to the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American second team, the organization announced today.
Havalchak, who earned second team All-America honors last spring from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), enters his junior season with an impressive resume that includes consecutive ECAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. He was one of 15 nominees for the Tewaaraton Trophy, which is awarded annually to the top men’s lacrosse player in the country.
In two years as a starter, Havalchak has 360 career saves with a 7.50 goals-against average. His 360 career saves already ranks ninth in school history. Against Dartmouth last season, he stopped a career-high 22 shots, and also had a 21-save effort in a 14-10 victory over eventual national-champion Syracuse on April 17.
Statistically, Havalchak finished last season as the ECAC leader in goals-against average (7.35), saves (172) and save percentage (.628). Nationally, he ranked fourth in goals-against average and second in save percentage.
Under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Jim Stagnitta, Rutgers returns six starters and 18 letterwinners in 2005. The Scarlet Knights, who have earned back-to-back at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament, open the season on March 5 when they travel to Newark, DE, to face Delaware. Rutgers’ schedule features games against six teams that qualified for last season’s NCAA Tournament.
