BLACKSBURG, VA - The Rutgers softball team (14-17; 0-4 BIG EAST) dropped a pair of games to Virginia Tech (28-12; 4-2 BIG EAST) on April 2, falling 8-0 in game one and 9-1 in game two in the fourth doubleheader for the Scarlet Knights since last Sunday.
Senior Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ), the hottest Rutgers pitcher over the last several weeks, kept the Hokies off the board until the third when Megan Evens hit a two-run home run to right center to give VT a 2-0 lead. The Hokies added two more in the fourth and put the game away with a four-run sixth inning.
Cosentino (6-4) took the loss for the Scarlet Knights, giving up four runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work. Junior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) had the most productive game at the plate, going 2-for-3 to give her 10 hits in her last 18 at bats.
Rutgers got on the board early in game two when sophomore Courtney Love (Houston, TX) scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) to make it 1-0 in the top of the first.
The Hokies answered with a seven-run second inning, highlighted by Evans' second home run of the day, a grand slam to center to make it 7-1 Virginia Tech. Evans finished the day 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs and six RBI. Senior Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) went 2-for-3 for the Scarlet Knights.
Senior Leah Black (Rocky River, OH) (5-7) went 5.2 innings, giving up nine runs on nine hits while striking out two.
