RU Drops Final Home Game to Cornell
Oct 27 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers field hockey team (6-12, 1-6 BIG EAST) fell in its final home game of the season, 4-2 to Cornell University (6-8) on Friday night at the RU Stadium Complex.
Head coach Liz Tchou felt the team, despite a less than impressive performance in the first half, raised its level of play in the second against Cornell.
"I'm really proud of the way the girls played in the second half," Tchou said. "Cornell came out with a lot of energy. We knew they liked to hit the ball forward-that was no surprise. The first half we came out a little bit tentative and they just outmatched us in the first half."
Tchou thought the team did a good job putting itself in position to score, though the play of Cornell's goalkeeper made it difficult to find the back of the cage.
"I really felt like we had the kind of opportunities we needed to score. I thought their goalkeeper did an excellent job in there," Tchou said. "It would have been a different game had we played the way we did in the second half right from the start."
Cornell got off to a quick start, scoring three goals in the first 21 minute of play. Just six minutes into the game, Mandy Malzberg scored her third goal of the season to give the Big Red an early 1-0 lead. In the 15th minute, Lindsay Moyer assisted Katlyn Donoghue on Cornell's second goal. Following a penalty stroke from Katie Bradshaw, the Big Red owned a 3-0 lead. After a goal from Abbi Horn, Cornell took a 4-0 lead before the half.
The Scarlet Knights came out aggressively in the second half, scoring in the 47th minute. Corinne Bach (Moorestown, N.J.) assisted Karen Brewster (Chico, Calif.) on her first goal of the season to make the score, 4-1.
With just 16 seconds remaining in the game, Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.) scored her 21st goal of the season off a penalty corner. Kristen Johnson (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) put the ball into play, Bach stopped it at the top of the circle and Lewis stepped in and nailed the ball past Cornell goalie Lizzie Goldblatt for the Rutgers goal.
Rutgers' goalie Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, Pa.) had seven saves in goal for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers will play its final game of the season when it travels to Princeton on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 1:00 p.m.
