Lewis' Four Goals Lead Rutgers to 6-3 Victory
Aug 27 | Field Hockey
WEST CHESTER, PA - Sophomore Amy Lewis (Hainesport, NJ) exploded for four goals, leading the Rutgers field hockey team (1-1) to a 6-3 victory at West Chester (1-1) Aug. 27.
'Out attack really came out strong today,' said fourth-year Rutgers head coach Liz Tchou. 'It wasn't just a certain line, but everyone did a good job of getting the ball out of the back and moving it forward. We were getting opportunities from several different players inside the 25, and getting a lot of good chances.'
Lewis teamed up with freshman Kristen Johnson (Sachem, NY) and junior Corinne Bach (Moorestown, NJ) for three penalty corner goals, the first coming 11:45 into the game for an early 1-0 RU advantage. Johnson scored her third goal in two days, connecting on an assist from teammate Jessika Hoh (Allentown, PA), less than four minutes later to make a two-goal lead.
The Golden Rams scored two straight goals to even the game in the 39th minute, but West Chester was issued a yellow card and RU took advantage. Lewis scored an unassisted goal at the 43:50 mark, then connected with Johnson and Bach for a score less than two minutes later, pushing ahead 4-2 while WCU was short handed. The Golden Rams fought back, scoring with just a little more than 20 minutes to play to pull within one (4-3). Lewis struck again off a penalty corner, and junior Catherine Badoloto (Berlin, NJ) put the game away with an unassisted goal in the 64th minute.
'After the loss yesterday (at Drexel) in a tight game, we knew we had to come out strong today and make a statement about who we are as a team,' said Bach. 'We came out really focused today. We pressured the full field for almost the whole game. We put them under a lot of pressure and our forwards were able to finish and score. It was nice to be able to put it all together today.'
Lewis, a second-team all-BIG EAST selection as a rookie last year, has now scored six goals in the season's first two games, while Johnson has already accumulated 11 points (three goals, five assists) as a freshman. Junior Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, PA) made three saves in the first half for RU, and freshman Leslie Kelly (Glassboro, NJ) had two second-half stops.
Rutgers will return to action Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Lafayette at 7:00 p.m.
