Rutgers Falls at Temple, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA, PA - A pair of goals from freshmen Jessika Hoh (Allentown, PA) and Kristen Johnson (Sachem, NY) were not enough, as the Rutgers field hockey team (2-2) lost to the host Owls (2-0) 3-2 Sept. 2 at the Temple Invitational.
Playing in a steady rain for most of the game, Temple struck first with a goal less than six minutes into the contest. RU fought to get the equalizer, finding the back of the goal when Hoh redirected a rebound with 8:05 to play in the first half for her first career score. However, the Owls entered the locker room ahead 2-1, scoring again with 2:14 showing on the clock.
Temple pushed the advantage to 3-1 five minutes into the second half, poking in a rebound off the post. Johnson redirected Corinne Bach's (Moorestown, NJ) shot 11 minutes later to make it a one-goal game, but Rutgers was unable to capitalize on several scoring chances during the final 18 minutes.
'I think we came out a little flat,' said fourth-year Rutgers head coach Liz Tchou. 'Temple played with more energy and enthusiasm right from the start, and I think it took us some time to get our bearings. Temple did a great job of tackling and pressuring us and the played very tough.
'In the second half I thought we played a lot better. We got a spark with the second goal, making it 3-2, and we had a lot of chances to tie it. Every game is a learning experience for us. We need to be tougher on each other in practice and work on playing tight hockey. Those are things we will definitely address in our upcoming practices.'
Junior Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, PA) made nine saves in goal, snuffing out several scoring chances for the Owls.
'Temple was very tough on the ball today, and they were very pumped up to play,' said Jessica Roos (Mickleton, NJ). 'We had a tough time dealing with their pressure. But Rosalyn was really great in goal today. Even though they did score three goals, she played very well. The few times we did get into the circle we scored, so that was a positive, but we have to continue to get tougher as a team.'
Rutgers will finish its five-game road stretch against No. 6 American Sunday, Sept. 3, at 2:00 p.m. to complete play at the Temple Invitational.
