PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's soccer team scored twice in the first half and three times in the second en route to a 5-0 rout of non-conference opponent Fairleigh Dickinson (0-6) Sunday night at Yurcak Field.
"It was a nice rebound for us," said head coach Glenn Crooks. "The players responded well after our sub-par game on Friday against Seton Hall."
The Scarlet Knights (5-3), were led by Caycie Gusman (Honolulu, Hawaii), who scored twice in the second half. Gusman came close to a hat trick, but a brilliant save by FDU goalie Rachel Derrico left her with only two goals for the game. Still, Crooks was pleased with the sophomore's performance.
"I was happy for Caycie," said the eighth-year coach. "She's always great in the box, and tonight that showed. It would have been nice to see her with a hat trick, but she played a great game nonetheless."
Alicia Hall (Port Republic, N.J.) scored in the 10th minute off a brilliant cross from Becky Wise (West Springfield, Mass.) to give RU a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Rheanne Sleiman (Vancouver, B.C.) got the ball to Hall on the right side of the box. The junior Hall then crossed to Kristie Lang (East Brunswick, N.J.), who tapped it in for her first goal of the year. Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) scored her third goal of the season in the second half on a beautiful left-footed strike.
"Attacking was a point of emphasis for us leading into the match," said Crooks. "Scoring was an issue against Seton Hall, we missed on many chances. It was nice to see us create and finish opportunities."
Rutgers' next game will be Friday, Sept. 28, when the Scarlet Knights travel to face BIG EAST foe Villanova.
