Two Scarlet Knights Named to 2008 Preseason All-ECAC Team

CAPE COD, MASS. - Junior Chris O'Dougherty (Kinnelon, N.J.) and sophomore Justin Pennington (Flemington, N.J.) were each named to the 2008 Preseason All-ECAC Men's Lacrosse team Wednesday, in a vote by league coaches.
Pennington is coming off a 2007 season in which he was named the ECAC Rookie of the Year. The sophomore is the Scarlet Knights leading returner in goals, assists, points and groundballs. Pennington was second in goals with 19 and assists with eight. He paced the team with 49 groundballs.
O'Dougherty, one of the league's best returning defenders, was a 2007 Second Team All-ECAC selection. O'Dougherty anchored a Rutgers defense that allowed only 9.69 goals a game and 36.6 shots a game. The defender started all 13 games for the Scarlet Knights last spring and placed fourth on the squad with 30 groundballs.
The Scarlet Knights, who were tabbed fifth in the preseason ECAC standings, are coming off a 2007 season in which they finished ranked 18th in the USILA Poll and 19th in Nike/Inside Lacrosse polls. RU posted a 7-6 overall record and a 4-3 mark in conference play. The Scarlet Knights also went 4-0 in one-goal games and matched up against four nationally-ranked teams.
Georgetown placed four players on the preseason All-ECAC team to lead all league schools, while Rutgers, Penn State and UMass added two student-athletes each to the preseason all-league team. Hobart and Loyola added one player respectively.
The ECAC will honor Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, as well as a Rookie of the Week during the 2008 season. Rutgers kicks of the 2008 season at home against UMBC on Feb. 23.
